On the evening of Saturday 06th July 2019 between 10-10.30pm, 2019 Canyon Torque was stolen from outside the Black Ivy Hotel, Alvanley Terrace. The bike was locked to the towbar mounted bike rack on my car, but the thieves use bolt-cutters to remove the bike. The car was only left unattended for under an hour, they were very quick and organised.
The custom blue decals make this bike one of a kind, to stand out from other carbon Torques, as they come with stock stealth decals.

With this one and with the electric bikes from Crammond being stolen at knife point it makes you wonder how organised these criminal gangs must be

@gembo - yes I used to think it was random thieves and chancers, but these thefts often are organised, with vans taking the cycles off to other cities to sell.Posted 5 years ago # -
given there is not really any lock that withstand a battery angle grinder, what are we meant to do ?
Is there a level of lock/chain that can resist a 36" and a 48" bolt-cutter ?
I look at the d-lock the police were handing out when they did the bike marking in St Andrews Sq last year - i think a set of nail cutters would open those.
a quick look on ebay - can buy a battery bolt-cutter that'll go through 6mm hardened chain in a few secs for 200 quid. Who can realistically carry round a motorbike chain ?

There is no device that can defeat thieves physically. Motorbike chains have their own flaws. A good D-lock is as good as it gets. As Crammond demonstrated if someone wants your bike enough they will wait for you to unlock it and then take it from you. A group of young men is by far the most dangerous animal on the planet.
IWRATS proposes;
1) Legalisation of all drugs and medicalisation of addiction.
2) A huge flattening of society to diminish inequality.
3) Education system based initially on empathy, joy and cooperation.It's survivalism in miniature. You can get tinned food and a gun and retreat to the wilds but you'll just fall asleep at some point.
Security comes through civilisation.

Crime groups exploit the disaffected and all societal problems including pernicious drug abuse play into this - I am absolutely with IWRATS here on all three....

The Crammond theft was so outrageous, stupid and audacious that it could only be madmen that did it. Threatening older women is one of the few real taboos left in our society.
The only bike thieving gang I have any personal knowledge of were heavy drug users, some more so than others. Multiple mental health issues on top excluded them from normal workplaces. Not organised, not geniuses just a gang willing to steal and not fussed about a few months inside from time to time.

I note that when I put up a post saying a cycle thief has been found guilty everyone's liberalism falls away, and they are calling for a noose and a handy branch.

Just ravens. I allow myself that one lapse in my otherwise impeccable liberalism.
Thing is to arrange matters so that as many people as possible can't see the point of stealing. Once a theft has occurred rage is all too likely. I find it hard not to want the Crammond perpetrators to be made to feel as scared as the two women undoubtedly did.

@IWRATS - I agree that the Cramond theft doesn't look like the organised thefts of following people with pricey cycles on their racks home & breaking into sheds. More of a young chancer. Scary as hell for the women.
Some guy was charged last year with a load of bike thefts, and handling stolen property, so evidently organised.

@AdamLovick Good to see the word getting out.
Like the two women with e-bikes you are not local and would probably think Edinburgh is a safe city. Statistically it is of course, but the growth in tourism has increased targets for the low life here.
My dealings with Police Scotland have generally been good. In three out of four cases I had 'close experience' of they got results. Will see what happens.Posted 5 years ago # -
CRAMOND BIKE THEFT
Boy, 16, due in court after two bikes worth £6k stolen from tourists in Cramond
A 16-year-old boy is due to appear in court after two women were robbed at knife point and had their electric bikes stolen.
The women, aged 47 and 62, were cycling the bikes at Cramond Foreshore before the incident near to the roundabout at Cramond Causeway.
Two males then approached the woman and one of them is alleged to have brandished a knife before the bikes were stolen.
The two bikes, both red Specialised Varda model E-Bikes with women's frames - one small and one medium and one with a black wicker basket on the back - are worth around £3,000 each.
The two women were uninjured and returned home on Monday before contacting police.
Detective Inspector Bruce Coutts, of Corstorphine CID, said previously that both victims were on a cycling holiday in Edinburgh.
A statement released today by police, said: "Police in Edinburgh have arrested a 16-year-old boy following a robbery at Cramond Foreshore on Monday 8th July.

@AdamLovick Realistically I don't think there's much more that you could have reasonably done. Bike security is a deterrent that works along the lines of "if I make my bike less of a target than someone elses then they'll go for that instead of mine" however if someone is determined to steal something they will.
I'm more surprised that no-one intervened against someone going at a bike locked to a tow-bar bike mount in the middle of Bruntsfield tbh. It's been a while since I lived up that way but you'd have been right outside the Edinburgh Bike Coop when that happened?
I'm considering fitting a GPS tracker to my "good" bike for this reason.

@mcairney Yeah I was. It is a shame that no one intervened. I would have if I saw someone trying to nick a bike.
My girlfriend has bought a little magnetic camera that I'm going to mount onto the back of the car inside the window from now on. It turns on with movement and notifies you there is movement so at least I can go and check moving forwards.

Hi folks, a colleague had his bike stolen from Canonmills on Sat 24 August and asked me to share the description, just in case... It's on Bike Register and I've told him to try Find That Bike as well. It's a silver/grey Trek 7.2 FX, black mudguards and Bike Register sticker on the seat post. It's a well used commuter hybrid. Thanks.

This bike was on Pinkhill last night and was still there this morn.
Unlocked. Assume stolen.
Have moved off street, so a little more safe, but still unlocked.
If anyone recognises then PM me.
If not collected don't know what to do, but will donate to good home I guess.

I've dropped a bike off at the local police station before. They reunited it with its owner later the same day. I think @IWRATS has had similar success.
They'd almost certainly pick it up from you if you preferred, too.
