Potentially helpful for a fall into the canal?

I can't remember ever injuring any part that a jacket like that would protect in a fall.

    Perhaps a collarbone-strengthening exo-skeleton would help?

From what I can tell they are focussing on protecting against life threatening injuries rather than common injuries. You might still be as likely to break your arm/leg/collarbone while wearing it but less likely to receive a neck/back injury.

Around 20 years ago I went across a bonnet in the manner shown in the video. It took a while for my shoulder to recover and this might have protected against the bruising.

However in my mind this falls into the shouldn't be necessary for utility riding category.
