Has anyone used Planet X recently?

I was thinking of buying a Pro Carbon EVO frameset, and some wheels, but was looking at their feedback and it seems awful.

It seems they have no shops now, and are wholly online, are they in trouble?

I have a Kaffenback frame and have always been happy with it, it's done about 8000 miles.

Is it a case of good, cheap stuff, but as customer service if something needs replaced/fixed, or avoid like the plague now?

    Ta.

*Edit I put in wrong category, but don't seem to be able to fix, should be in question, rather than infrastructure.

I haven't used PX for major purchases, yet. I do keep eyeing up the XLA and London Road bikes as N+1 candidates. If only they accepted my employers Cycle To be Work vouchers...(but Alpkit does...).

However I bought various bits and bobs a few weeks ago and I've had good stuff from them in the past. My last order arrived well packed and on time. I've never had any major gripes. I hadn't noted their shops down south closing. Guess the internet competition is stiff. I did read online that one of their warehouses was the subject of a robbery.

Certainly I'd suspend belief on some of their RRP statements - what they charge is good value. I picked up an enduro style helmet for my daughter recently and it cost £15. For the money it's excellent.

Only downside I've found is that postage is a flat £3.95. Less good if you're after a couple of pairs of bargain socks or inner tubes.

I put in an order for a frame, and wheels. Despite website saying there was 18 in stock, I got an email saying no stock, and will send full order when frame is back in stock.

We'll see how long it takes to fulfill, won't start whining at them until a week or so.

On the plus side it'll give me some time to lose weight as I think I'd probably burst the wheels at the moment...

(Latest ploy to get back on a bike, replace my end of life Cervelo with an equally redeiculous carbon frame/wheels, look out for a cheap Pro Carbon EVO with SRAM Force and carbon wheels in 6 months time ;) )

  4. You're swapping a Cervelo for a PX?!!!

Alas, yes. In my humble biased opinion, the 2008 Cervelo Soloist (the same frameset Carlos Sastre won the 2008 tour on) is the most beautiful road bike of the modern era - I'll post a picture when I get to a computer.

The bike is special to me too, I bought it in 2009 as a treat when I gave up smoking, and used it as a commuter all year round, it's got about 15,000 miles on it. Everyone used to say I was crazy commuting on that bike, I used to retort, it cost me a fortune, I'm getting my monies worth.

Unfortunately now, it's not safe to ride, there's basically no clearance between the back wheel, and chainstays, and over time the wheel has rubbed holes in the chainstays, and if you take the wheel off pinching the chainstays results in an inch of movement, essentially the wheel is giviu the rigidity, and any speed above 20 mph results in the most terrifying speed wobble, so it can't be ridden now.

I can't bring myself to put it in the bin, and so it will be cleaned up, and highly polished, and hung on my study wall to be appreciated for the price of art it is.

These days I'm closing in on 50, have a toddler to look after, and neither have the time, nor the speed in my legs - truth be told I never had the speed in my legs - to justify another high end Fram which in reality might do 400 hundred miles a year on the occasional Saturday run.

I also quite like Planet X, I already own a steel framed Kaffenback which I use as a commuter, and it feels solid, and quite road bike like in the feedback it gives, despite being over 15kg when loaded with pannier and marathon + tyres for commuting.

    I will miss my Cervelo...

Eek, see'ing typos above, don't try to write long post on a phone!

Anyway, I can't find a decent photo of my Cervelo, seems a change of phones has gotten rid of most of them!

My favourite photo of it is about 4/5th down this page:

Typically, whist some colours are more expensive, the colour of frame I purchased is £77 cheaper today, yep.

    Is it Sand or beige?

Lol, my Kaff is most definitely beige. It's a shame, that seems to have been discontinued.

This one is 'Dark Gloss Red'.

Not been dispatched yet, when you're used to ordering things on Amazon at 7pm and they magically arrive the next day, online bike shopping (if this is representative) is archaic (though I remember good experience with Wiggle)...

They haven't answered the email I sent on Tuesday about price matching the lower price yet either, think I'll now just get the credit card company to deal with that and save my energy. Luckily I have purchase protection!

    Sure it will arrive sometime.

  10. I've never ordered a bike from PX but they are quite slow with general bits n bobs. I'd imagine a bike would take even longer.

They've lost a few lights and things (and were very slow to refund) but I've had two prompt frames from them and a few swift tyre-refunds when I overestimated how wide a tyre could fit on my singlespeed with mudguards. At some point I need to find enough other things to order to justify getting a new chaintug to replace the fatally-corroded original.

Should have mentioned, it arrived unexpectedly on Saturday 2nd.

It has more bits on it than this now, just waiting for a carbon hack saw blade to arrive, and then all that needs to be done is to cut the steerer and run the cables, and adjust etc...

**Don't know what happened to the image, adding :small to end of url used to display images from twitter quite well.

Great to see over the weekend that Planet X have been saved for now (they seem to be in financial trouble a lot).

Gulp, it was 4 years ago I built that frame up - I haven't actually riden it further than round the block!
