Campaign Against Long Cars (CALC)

On my commute into Edinburgh of a morning I notice that each car only has one person in it.

This is a terrible waste of space.

If cars were shortened to reflect the redundant space then the flow of traffic would improve tremendously.

I am crowd funding to create The Crusher. This will be a mostly harmless device which will shorten cars to say 3 metres. Obviously this could be adapted for example if your car was very long and you were also an ignorant driver giving scant regard to other road users (bikers, cyclists, scooters, pedestrians Etc) a simple twist of the dial could extend the crushing period and bring your car down to 2.5 metres.

Clearly if people were willing to car share The Crusher would be unnecessary. Sadly given The Situation we live in, with the world all Swift and Angular and anomie raging everywhere it turns out everyone must have their own car. So shorter cars is the clear solution. I also would suggest that bringing in a congestion charge linked to vehicle length is another winner. Cars of 2.5 metres or less need not pay the charge. For example.

    Bring on The Crusher.

Words typed elsewhere caused me to unearth Alasdair Gray's Lanark - yellowed, aged and much loved - from its resting place behind Montalbán's Les Recettes de Carvalho. The Crusher seems like an idea Gray might have forgotten to include.

Things really started to go wrong with the introduction of the long wheelbase Transit to our streets. That catalysed a wave of fourbyfourism and detonated an explosion of executive saloon envy. I propose The Scalper to take the 4x4s down to size and The Bedraggler to muss up all the sleek phalluses.

In regards to my automobile (l > 3.5m) I would be pleased to have a law where I can only direct it away from town or to our house unless I have a Chit from City Hall.

Of the Triumvirate - Gray, Kelman, Leonard who all drank together in The Doublet Bar Gray was least able to hold his drink.

Anthony Burgess loved Lanark. I think it sold well? Gray obvioisly a very talented artist too. He has some great wee short stories too and was more theatrical than Kelman in his reading aloud. He could get high in many senses of the word. Leonard was the most compelling performer but he only ever did Rage and then a little quietus.

You may wish to avoid later works by Gray such as Ludmilla and McGrotty, 1982 Janine and Something Leather tho his History of the Preface was an intriguing idea that took up much of his dotage (he has actually rallied a bit in his health of late so who knows).

On The Crusher We will give Hankchief a chitty when he takes the extended bicycles out.

    What about CAWC?

@jdanielp I did think about that.

But will not solve the traffic flow problem as narrow cars take up as much length as wide cars.

4 by 4 now that is mental. No one who drives a four by four ever goes off road. Chelsea tractor etc they are just bossing the road with all the other oversized vehicles.

You sometimes see a dirty land rover like the path was muddy or they actually went into a field. But range rovers, Subaru, whatever the others are, these brands are always clean as they just travel on asphalt, they do not even go on to unpaved roads never mind actual off road.

The last thing I saw advertised was a minature 4 by 4 like it had been put through The Shrinker. Like a four by four but smaller.

Obviously if we reduce length and width, make it lighter by removing internal combustion engine, very heavy items those, bring in a crank shaft or maybe a chain to drive the f
Thing forward under human propulsion you would have something similar to a bicycle.

I just wrote an article for The Hootsman. Might have touched on that.

This will soon be the predominant vehicle in the New Town.

    Dear @gembo,

Please do not crush the Subies: Outbacks and Foresters (knock yourself out with Legacy, Impreza, XV). They are my favourite cars ever due to many lovely memories of bushwalks and canyons they took us to (along fire trails and dirt roads). I get very excited when I see one.
But you are right, there is heaps of them in New Town that are squeaky clean and not fulfilling their destiny :(

    @bill

I won't crush your memories, these vehicles were all out of town. The Crusher only operates on cars driven into Edinburgh

Great idea Gembo. The crusher should also make cars narrower. Extend to their single occupants the same demand they make of cyclists riding two abreast.

When we get The Crusher up and running we will have the theme song The Crusher by The Novas playing each time we Do The Crusher.

    Options will be

Do the Hammer Lock you turkey necks
Do the Eye Gouge you turkey necks
Do the Crusher you turkey necks

All drivers of cars over 3 metres are of course Turkey Necks in the eyes of The Crusher.

I'd say I'm an ex long-car owner but according to the website my new car (~4.2M) isn't that much shorter than the old car (~4.7m)!

My wife's car is just over 4m at the moment. The wee Seicento used to be only 3.3m.
Would gembo be satisfied with hexagonal cars with fixed side length but varying in height across different models for perfect tesselation?

In the UK last year more than 150,000 new cars sold were over 4.8 metres long, too large to fit in a standard parking space.

Sounds more like a bus than a car.

One of the days IWRATS was round fixing the bike we were shooting the breeze at the garage door looking at the world go by and a LIncoln Continental came through the lights. The longest car I have ever seen.

Love the way them Yankee automobiles wallow on their soft suspension. Took a full minute to go by so long was it. Or it felt that way.

Plus it only had two doors. Crazy.

Whereas the X-trail will have three bikes, three blokes, six panniers and a Kelly kettle

My campaign is specifically aimed at lone drivers of cars over 3m

Many thanks to Moose for the lend. Would not have worked without it as IWRATS and Taom did a charlie baton exchange in Blair atholl Car park involving Thule bars and of course Charlie and his bike,
