    Not Edinburgh, I know, but!
Turning left off maryhill road in very big hgv, at traffic lights, cyclist passed several minutes previously, safely , cause the cyclist was in the bus lane and I wasn’t!
Stopped at lights, primary position used, for hgv that means straddling both ns, and outside lanes, ns indicator engaged and flashing for some time before I stop and await green light, I have , 5 other lanes of traffic to observe, my 2, opposing2 and the lane I want to enter on my left, railings to my left, parked car, on my lane I wish to enter, railings and a bus, which has been stopped far back from stop line as driver predicts my wide and intrusive turn, green light , , and my left mirror life saver spots the cyclist weaving between parked car and my trailer just before the well publicised blind spot !!! As I use some expletive , he gives ME the digit! Another second and I would have been moving and possibly disaster!!! He carried on up the maryhill road having caused all other vehicles to stop. Education of all road users about all road users is absolutely essential to avoid the obvious possible outcomes here !
    Be safe !

Sorry to hear that splitshift & well done for being diligent.

Education of all road users about all road users is absolutely essential

Unfortunately this isn't possible. How is it possible to educate every road user, including children, to the n-th degree about every possible situation?

The point is, the "dangerous situations" need to be designed out.

    That means:

    - separating lorries (and other heavy vehicles) from vulnerable road users
    - in the meantime, removing the source of the danger - this could mean restricting HGVs to motorways & trunk roads with city deliveries made by lighter vehicles with better visibility and lower human-crunching capabilities.

Not what you want to hear, I know, but for every 1000 close-calls like you had, there is a fatality

As you can cycle on almost any road apart from a motorway I don’t think separating lorries is realistic as can cycle on trunk roads and lorries would still need to use some minor roads. How would lorry’s get from the quarry to the motorway etc.

We might not be able to completely separate lorries and bikes, but we can certainly improve the present situation.

Got any of that on camera? You never know we might recognise him (would never be a her?)

Coming back from podiatrist yesterday on Dumbarton Road, woman on basic utility 3-spd, ahead clearly with problem judging traffic behind, as she stops at parked car unable to filter out, whilst I'm moving roughly at traffic speed (which SHOULD be 20mph). She catches up enthusing that she's just started riding - helmet perched on head - loose straps. I observe that she'll need to get a bit more practise at looking behind to avoid having to stop, and aware of van driver revving up behind me. I pull away slightly faster maintaining primary through single lane at road works & demonstrating non-standard hand signal about following too close behind.

It probably is on the cameras, will enquire later! It was one of those events that at the time arnt anything except annoying , but after a bout 5 mins I was literally shaking with, fear is the best word! It was a guy, black frame black clothes, woolen Tammy on head, beard, and an offensive finger!
Am ok now, am sure he will be offensive and lucky hopefully lots more!

Maybe someone could design laser guides that shine down onto the road beside lorries when indicator is on saying "blind spot" and a big no entry sign?
