    Hello Long time no post

I’m in the process of setting up my current ride to carry cargo, I don’t know if many of you have seen these longtail conversions by Xtracycle?

Been wanting such a conversion since I was a student over a decade ago and figured as a new years resolution was to go for this option (knowing my luck I should have gone for an electric cargo bike but I don’t have the space for two bikes and I can’t sell my current one as I’m too attached to it and it’s been set up so I can fit on it, it’d be cheaper to ride it till the frame goes).

Anyway I was working at the bike station to install the unit onto the bike and it seemed to be coming along. I thought I’d go ahead and upgrade the drivetrain from a 1x10 to a 1x11 as a necessity for the extra heft. I had even gone to the trouble of ording longer cables for the job just in case.

    The current rear hub.

Unfortunately when I was tightening the new cassette to the freehub the lockring split off.

Long story short I read online of questions answered on the store page of the cassette I bought that said that the cassette would fit but it appears that in my haste to attach it I didn't check that the freehub body may have been too short after all, that and the larger gears are dished so that they rub the spokes preventing any backpedalling. This means I need to replace the hub.

I’m such a fool for doing this sure but all research I did said otherwise, so I wanted to ask on what sort of hub I should I go for? Obviously an 11 speed hub, 135mm in width but I wondered if an internal gear setup would be better. After all, the solid axles may be better suited for carrying loads.

I was thinking of the Alfine by Shimano but I’m not away of anyone using it for a cargo bike and I’m not keen on spending so much on the rohloff 14 speed internal hub as it is. Nuvinci I’ve heard have some reliability issues.

I'm not going to install a front derailleur as my whole setup revolves around a simple drivetrain (as awkward as that may seem).

I've got a Bullitt with an Alfine 11.

I have had some issues with it, and it may not be as strong as other solutions, but it has had a spring reseated and now seems happier...

Worth a try, but if it dies I'll try a Rholoff (exchange rate permitting!).
