Pop-Up PoP: Davidson’s Mains Primary School Bike Bus

Hi all. Partly so I don’t chicken out, I’ve decided to acknowledge publicly that I have committed to organising a bike bus for my local primary school in Davidson’s Mains. This will be on Friday 26th April, leaving from Davidson’s Mains Park main entrance at 8.15am, then riding a loop down Silverknowes Avenue to Silverknowes Road, then back up to the school via the bridge beside NCN1. Think it should take 20-25 minutes to do this, if there’s a reasonably mixed group. It’ll be quicker if it’s just me, I guess.

This will clash with the Forrest Road human protected lane pop-up and other bike busses (sorry), but thought I would mention here in case anyone local would feel able to help with the ride? I know a couple of Forum members live out this way, so if you had time...

    Cheers!

Just bumping this to say that I’ve had kind offers of help from a couple of forum members, and my Facebook advertising is picking up some positive interest, so I think the bike bus is a go.

    Thanks all.

Well done for arranging this. I’ve helped with the Sciennes PS cycle to school for a while now and it’s a rewarding experience. I’d recommend using the same model as it is very effective. The Sciennes ride sets off from Kings Buildings after a quick briefing. Two or more adults at the front keep the speed down and two or three adults remain at the rear. We take up the whole carriageway and keep the group together as much as possible, right up Causewayside - otherwise drivers squeeze by, and in, splitting the group. Those riders near the front encourage new riders to join by pulling over and giving them room. This saves people trying to sprint onto the rear.
Having bike mounted cameras are worth considering as is someone at school counting the riders in. I’m sure you know to be prepared for impatient drivers.
Good luck and I look forward to seeing some pictures.
    Cheers

Thanks, Colin - am trying to learn as much as I can from others' experience of this sort of event. It's picking up some interest on Facebook and a general email has just gone out via the school, so am hoping we get a reasonable number of participants!

    Still lots to do...

So, planning is coming together for this - thanks to everyone for the advice and help so far. One or two people I have bumped into around the area have mentioned it to me, so the advertising is having some effect - now to see what interest we get n the day.

Good luck to the other events happening over the weekend, and hope everyone here will be able to contribute to one of them, somewhere along the way.

Yes, a huge success yesterday. A few selected photos here:

I really wasn’t expecting so many people to turn up. There was huge support from the school community, and people just kept appearing as we went round the route. Even had to alter a small part of the route on the fly as we were too large to fit along a section of NCN1! Feedback from parents, school and Councillor Work has been incredibly positive.

I wasn’t able to get a count of participants, but we must have been at about 150+. I was quite overwhelmed by it all!

Well done @NiallA. Mini-me hasn't stopped talking about it all weekend. Wondering whether it could be a regular feature given the numbers.

    @davidsondave

I think the misspelling of Definitely as Definately, is going to be a plot twist in Line of Duty

N.B. Definately is correct spelling in Glasgow and Belfast as in Definately Big Man

Hi - yes, we're going to do this again next Friday, 31st May, using a longer route from the West (starting at Barnton) and a simultaneous East route from Blackhall. Full (fool?) details in school email, or at FaceBook event page: https://www.facebook.com/events/2032486993714745/

We'll then hopefully repeat all of this on Thursday 20 June, which is National Clean Air Day, apparently.

    :-)
