    Bill Drummond sez:

Every year I mark the date on my calendar when I see my first Swift. Yesterday was that day. This morning I wrote these words.

    Each year I wait.
    I need the wait .
    I need the waiting.
The waiting proper begins when I see the first Snowdrops in late January.
And it builds, when it’s the purple and saffron of the Crocus in February. I try to pretend
the waiting is not there. Because it becomes too intense at times.

The wait starts when they leave.

Swift screaming during the PY Hangout 'bout 09h00. Not sure my mic picked it up.

Finally spotted my first swift of 2020 as I was cycling along the Union Canal towpath around Wester Hailes yesterday evening. Clocked the unmistakable scimitar-shaped silhouette against the sky and then watched as it swooped down towards the water. I thought for a moment that it was unusual for swifts to go for insects that low - it's usually a swallow or house martin trick - but then I saw it skim the surface and scoop up a quick drink before zooming off in to the sky again. Wonderful and uplifting to see.

    Cartoon in Private Eye.

One cat to another, while holding down a prostrate bird.

    "Fancy a swift half?"

I have never had a swift half before

I had a swift pint once when led astray by another barman (the doublet had an upstairs bit for the genteel and he was working there and I was on break same as him and he said if we ran along the rod we could have a pint in the Blythswood Cottage then run back on shift). Very unenjoyable pace and indeed for about an hour afterwards on shift I was rather discombooberated

The swifts seem to stay around town more and fly lower when it's damp.

    I do love this thread.

Anyone know where the swifts go when it's windy? Presumably somewhere more sheltered where there are insects? They vanished from the New Town skies for the couple of days when the wind got up, but were back in place yesterday evening.

They enter torpor in the nest space when it's cold and wet. They're amazing birds - they just climb above weather systems at night and snooze flying in high-altitude circles.

You mean since you went over the handlebars in my favourite section of your book? That was the last time you landed and you haven’t landed since?

Ah Père Gembeau I am glad that you like that bit it is very important. There is a twist in it of course which is that the world goes upside down but in a literal reading is never restored to its proper orientation so from that point on everything is topsy-turvy.

That is very exciting. I took madame to see Billy in 2015. He radiates warmth and justice.
