“CALLOUS teenage thugs mocked a crying nine-year-old girl after sending her father sprawling down an embankment near the Union Canal in a terrifying motorbike attack.

William Paris suffered a broken arm and fractured wrist among a host of other injuries as he attempted to shield daughter Libby after the yobs roared down the path towards them during a Sunday afternoon cycle near Ratho Park Golf Club.”

Awful story. I was cycling there quite recently and found the narrow path above the embankment slightly off-putting.

That is shocking. What is wrong with some people? On a more positive note, I was impressed to read that 'William and Libby – who only learned to ride a bike three weeks ago – were returning from the 16-mile round trip to the Bridge Inn in Ratho from Edinburgh Quay at the time of the incident.'

Yes this may well put them off.

I could not work out where the motorbike gang struck? Presume on the towpath? But where is the embankment?

I think it was the bit quite far out towards Ratho where there are fields to the north of the towpath, but far lower down with a steep slope and no barrier. I remember being nervous of this when the path had only just been covered in loose gravel a while back.

Probably unregistered off-road/trail type bikes. You get them on the WoL walkway south of Lanark Road as well, often heading for this area.

Cue yet more infrastructure in an attempt to deny access to such scrotes which mainly serves to make life unnecessarily difficult for legitimate users of the towpath?

    A gibbet with ravens perhaps?

    Not near Ratho, but: https://twitter.com/EdinburghPolice/status/1126437995698171904

At around 5.20pm last night a female youth tried to push a male cyclist into the Union Canal as he cycled along the cycle path at Murrayburn Drive. This had the potential to cause serious injury and we're treating it seriously. Anyone with information is asked to come forward.

@iwrats: A gibbet with ravens perhaps?

With ravens in judgemental attendance, certainly. Not actually strung up on the gibbet, though. That would never do.

So that's multiple attempts and some successes at pushings into the canal, glass bottles being thrown, and motorbikes being driven at people in recent months. What is going on?

@jdanielp - between Ratho and the by-pass there are stretches when you are aware that you are on an embankment and there's a nasty looking drop down into fields.
