    I'm just thinking…

If this (not excessively disruptive) arrangement of the bus routes can work for a few weeks this month, why couldn't it work as an alternative for them using Leith Street permanently?

The next step is hopefully obvious. Even if motor vehicle access were to be restricted to just one direction, that would leave enough space for a proper uphill cycleway.

Hehe, @chdot, you must have been at Picardy Place around the same time as me today!

I was just thinking that now that the cycleway seems to be near enough finished, and that the steep slog up from the London Road roundabout is now reduced to one lane, the council really should open the cycleway in the uphill direction. I don't know how long the road has been reduced to just one lane since, but it really can't be fun cycling up there now with other traffic behind you and no way for it to pass you safely.

(Re: my first post, what I meant was that if the buses were functioning perfectly well diverted from Leith Street recently, that would give scope for closing the street to motor traffic uphill beyond Calton Road and give us space for the cycleway that we need right up to North Bridge, not just the 3/4 of the way that has been built.)

Also featured in those shots are the worlds most ignored no right turn signs!

Is the Leith Stret cycleway still affected by the RSO hearing malarkey?

“you must have been at Picardy Place around the same time as me today!”

    Nope, yesterday.

Pedaled up Leith St today around 3 with miniMcR in child seat. Took the single lane all the way up, was hideous.

Counting the days until it'll be removed in 2029.

    Optimist.

Leith Street was back open again when I went up it at 19:20 this evening.

Interestingly, the 3 "No right turn" signs are back at the Picardy Place Roundabout - they were removed while Leith Street was closed.

They haven't built out the cones again so it had the usual level of obedience.

    Dedicated pram way?
Assume it's not open yet but will experience a mix of uses whe it is.

    Random photo off Flickr

    Newcastle

Looks like nice wide path with some degree of priority over sidestreet.

    Oh, and some barriers...

That “priority over side street” is the typical badly implemented UK version. It still intuitively looks like the road has priority.

Instead, the cycleway surface should be continuous, as should the footway. The entrance ramps should be steeper and the bend radii far tighter. The yellow lines should not cut across the cycle-/ footway

Does anyone know if there’s newer plans for Picardy Place than these ‘final’ designs? Noticed there’s a one way cycle crossing between the North Eastern ped crossing and ASL that isn’t shown here. http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/news/article/2476/final_road_layout_agreed_for_picardy_place_as_enabling_works_continue

MMW, George IV Bridge, The Mound and George Street are all chaotic with pedestrians today. Perfect practice for the Leith Street cycleway!
