Odd request, I mistakenly bought some fairly scraped Tiagra shifters on fleabay (long story), luckily managed to negotiate the price down after telling the business seller how stupid I was. To the point that when they arrived they didn't seem that bad for the price.

Now I want to refurbish them - they are mechanically fine. I've bought some new hoods, and some wet sandpaper, which goes up to 5000 grit, so I should be able to sand out the scratches on the plastic pretty well.

I want to paint the aluminium levers, and I thought given my work bike is pretty retro I could paint them a chrome colour to match handlebars etc.

So 2 questions, does anyone know what the tool is called to detach the lever from the shifter?
and presumably to paint, sand, prime (2 coats) 3 coats of car? paint, then a clear coat and we're good?

I have a modellers airbrush, so should be able to get a reasonable finish.

Has anyone done this before, or am I mad for going to this level of detail and cost to fix up some old shifters...
