    Hi all,

The City of Edinburgh Council is preparing a list of potential locations to install on-street bike parking. Does anyone want to suggest anywhere where there is demand and no infrastructure?

These locations should be destinations and commuting spots rather than overnight/residential parking.

    Thanks

I thought CEC was always looking at places for more bike parking (good thing too).

This forum has been amazed on a few occasions at how fast racks have been installed after being suggested by people here.

People generally have been encouraged to just email suggestions to CEC.

    Was cycling@, then probably activetravel@.

Perhaps you could set up bikeparking@.

It might be useful to publish a list of ‘sites under consideration’ or better still a map.

Some people might even try using https://edinburgh.cyclescape.org or things like https://www.fixmystreet.com/.

What’s the current bike parking budget and how many racks do you expect to add this year?

    Are you still installing Cyclehoops?

A Sheffield stand outside the Golden Rule/Edinburgh Diving Centre (junction of Watson Crescent and Yeaman Place) would be good.

I'm sure I'll come up with somewhere else in a bit...

    Dear Active Travel team,

Thanks for this initiative. I'd like to propose some racks at the following locations:

    - Near the shops outside Tanfield, Canonmills: https://osm.org/go/evfLl2gv1--?layers=C&m=

    - Near the shops on Brandon Tce: https://osm.org/go/evfLlye90--?layers=C&m=

    - Outside Bellfield on Bellfield St: https://osm.org/go/evfhjUsP9?layers=C&m=

And lots more needed along Portobello Prom.

“And lots more needed along Portobello Prom.”

And Princes Street, and other such ‘difficult’ places.

Outside Gannet and Guga on east market street so Malcom the owner can lock his bike? Malcolm makes exceedingly good sandwiches.

On a roll now as it were

Outside the Counter Canal boat cafe at leamington lift bridge to enable the barista to lock his bike.

Outside Appellation Wines in Comelybank so that Ashton The Wineman can park his new bike (he is about to buy)

There are still loads of post offices without any bike racks outside. They often are in wee rows of shops, so it would be a good target to have bike parking at every post office. In south Edinburgh that includes:

    • Oxgangs Broadway
    • Southhouse Broadway
    • Colinton Mains Drive
    • Liberton Gardens
    • Bridge Road (Colinton)

Similarly, all community centres should have bike parking. In south Edinburgh, I don't think there are any near:

    • Goodtrees CC (Moredunvale Place)
    • Gracemount CC
    • Castleview Centre (Craigmillar Castle Avenue)
    • Prestonfield Neighbourhood Centre and Cameron House

    Elsewhere:

    • The shops at Liberton Brae.
    • Castle Esplanade (I got a row for taking my bike into the Castle recently, and was told that they are reconsidering their opposition to bike racks here, so a wee nudge might help).
    • Deanhaugh Street.
    • George St between North Castle St and Frederick St.
    • Shops on the south side of Niddrie Mains Drive (between Craigmillar Castle Road and Craigmillar Castle Avenue

Somewhere near the revised Leith Links swingpark, when it's finished, preferably on the spiderweb side and/or the gate on the Community Croft side.
    KG5 park off Eyre Place?

I was down at Cramond the other day with bike+trailer and had to lock my bike to a bench. So some proper stands near the toilets/ice cream van would be super.

I had a thought the other day that may or may not have been very good. But the council seem to be doing a lot of work building out pavements at junctions for safety. But it also kind of creates a lot of dead space which is often used for illegal parking. You could potentially install bike racks on these (when they are laid) to create bike parking and prevent pavement parking at the same time.

Any more of this and we will become a council consultation

“(when they are laid) to create bike parking and prevent pavement parking at the same time”

    Roll-on some jointed-up-thinking.

“Any more of this and we will become a council consultation”

    This is probably more productive.

@CECactivetravel well worth a trawl though that list to see if there are any ‘outstanding’ requests.

@chdot with Jointed up thinking if one person hogs the mike with their own ideas are they accused of Bogarting?

Would a Google map of potential locations not be a better way to collate the suggestions?

Post offices are a good idea. The one at Duart Crescent is missing any racks and the one at Barnton only has 2 racks. It could do with more, possibly at the other end of the row of shops.

@gembo, that may be lost on your younger listeners.

Good thing about CCE is that an infinite number of monkeys can type at the same time.

“Would a Google map of potential locations not be a better way to collate the suggestions?”

Maybe OpenStreetMaps needs a new tag for ‘suggested bike parking location’!

But ‘obviously’ all you need is this -

    https://edinburghcouncil.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=9dfa229ba4004f7ca642ed3bd9702094

With a new layer box for “proposed bike parking” (there already is one for “Future Potential Path Routes”) AND regular updating.

@chdot, not that I want to drift the thread man but the film Easy Rider Peter Fonda/Jack Nicholson/Dennis Hopper et cetera

Had a song called Don’t Bogart Me/Don’t Bogart That Joint

By the Fraternity of Man (including Richie Hayward who went on to Little Feat)

Bogarting means holding on to the communal marijuana cigarette for longer than is socially acceptable when others are waiting for their shot.

Humphrey Bogart was a film star often in trilby hat and macintosh with a cigarette permanently stuck to his bottom lip

As the Active Travel team are reading and hopefully listening to this thread, please can we keep it on topic so they don't have to read through a whole load of noise to find the information they are looking for?

    Yours, the thread police.

Another post office and delivery centre that needs racks:

    - Salisbury Pl: https://osm.org/go/evfK9iNhH?layers=C&m=

    - Strathearn Rd: https://osm.org/go/evfK2SxDy--?layers=C&m=

  25. Put some along the edge of the pavement outside Finn & Bear on the Shore and solve two issues:

    1. Insufficient bike parking long the Shore, which results in visitors chaining bikes to anything and everything

    2. It'd act as barrier to prevent the daily delivery vans which drive off the road and onto the wide paved area there to park up.

Somewhere near the bus stop outside the fish shop near top of Broughton Street please. Thin parking pickings there.

And, Meadowbank retail park, that's private maybe? There's basically 4 old-fashioned triangle hoop locks for the whole site, compared with 100s of car spaces. Even 1 rack outside tk-maxx would help.

Kirkgate in Leith could do with some.

And more along Leith Walk, eg around Weigh to go. Maybe also those permanently blocked by abandoned bikes could get cleared and those damaged by motor vehicles could get replaced.

Princes St could do with more, too.

More racks needed at the front and back of the EICC - the ones in Conference Square are always full.

Shandwick Place. Even hoops on lamp-posts would be better than the present set-up.
