It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.
RULES No personal insults. No swearing.
Some suggestions from recent experience:
Dundee Terrace, next to the cycle hire mats (and near a post office, a post box, and a pharmacy).
Gorgie Road near Newton Street (shops; maybe in front of the high school?).
Near the Custom House Gallery in Leith.
At the Bonaly car park for the Pentland Hills. (I really appreciate the ones that were added at Swanston recently.)
There is a couple at Bonaly just before the gate but they're not the most accessible.

Anyway, yeah bike parking:
- Montrose Terrace, next to Century General Store
- Cadzow Place, next to or in front of Eastside Bikes
- Cadzow Place, next to Safari Lounge
These are all places where people lock their bikes to signposts, so maybe cycle hoops would be a good idea.
Also Easter Road, between Rossie Place and London Road.
There is some bike parking outside Iceland at the souther end, which is great. However there is scope for some near the Post Office further north: the pavement is widened here (south of the bus stop) and is often used by the owner of the adjacent hair salon to pavement park their branded pickup truck (???!!!). Some Sheffield stands there would be useful for folk going to the Post Office or nearby shops and cafes, and might help to deter pavement parking and loading by motor vehicles at that spot.
Was at the open streets today, and wanted to go to one of the whisky shops on the Royal Mile, but there's only two bike racks I could see - at St. Giles' Street outside the high court, and there was already 6 bikes locked up there. I considered locking my bike to one of the temporary barriers, but couldn't be bothered asking if that was ok, so decided to give up and try again during the week.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Some of them cannot be included as they are private property, there is not enough space or there are short/mid-term plans that will include dedicated bike parking.

last time i was there, i saw stickers advising cyclists to lock up securely, but sod all for them to lock up to. bikes were haphazardly crammed everywhere, and several people were using their bike to go across the causeway (very difficult with all the other walkers), possibly because there was nowhere to lock them.

agree. for example, in raeburn place, there are horrid bollards to prevent pavement parking, but cycle hoops would do the same. the current racks in stockbridge are usually full.
the pavements in stockbridge are not typically wide enough to replace those bollards with bike parking, but just as a thought for other streets being looked at.
just make cycle parking an automatic part of any development. the easier it gets to lock up, the more people will cycle.
Boardwalk cafe at silverknowes has racks now. This seems to have inspired him and hw wants a bike path the glows in the dark and some fairly wacky other suggestions. Move the castle to silverknowes. Tear down the new town and use the stone to build an Atlantis at silverknowes etc most ideas do seem to centre on silverknowes
If the CEC chap is still reading, I'd be really interested to hear if there's some problem stopping racks at Cramond shore / harbour area? Seems to me it must be a deliberate omission.
It's making me drive rather than cycle there today.
Gembo, the last i read about the silverknowes cafe rack saga was that the council wanted him to pay for the racks? i don't always agree with him, but i do admire his passion for developing access in the area. i recommend Cramond to out-of-towners looking for an alternative to Portobello.
inertia (and undone work) have me firmly in hand, otherwise i'd be tempted to ride down to take advantage of those racks.
I am taking my protege tomorrow (my old boss who has retired and bought himself a lovely croix de fer - have had him out the WoL path and then innocent to Dalkeith way then retreat) so tomorrow Crammond by canal then wol path to Murrayfield then Russell road and back via red bridge

Adding cycle parking stands at almost every junction build-out has been a basic standard for Glasgow for well over a decade. Then again we've had a policy of installing 200-400 stands per year since 1995, and a standard (for quality & function) since I wrote this with Alan McLean in 1995 (steel thickness, protective finishes, quality of bending, tapping rail, cycle parking sign etc).
That said there are designs which are widely used outside the UK, that offer higher parking capacity and neater cycle parking (where bikes can't slide down/fall over) 26 bikes on a footprint 5m x 3m, modular, all bikes accessible, can be used for trikes, & bakfiets (at reduced capacity/larger footprint)
Chris's picture has given me an idea for street sign poles too (as well as neater parking attached to pedestrian guardrails, and property fencing/walls). Happy to discuss with a local manufacturer....

Was out at climbing centre the other day - pushed up from canal towpath to racks on the east side. Observed Tiso closed down so could not cut through so walked back to lowest level of the centre and back up the metal fire escape style stairs. Observed more racks to the west of the front door. Racks a plenty, access not fab from the towpath but that is another matter
No doubt this has come up before but if there's a prize for the worst cycle racks in Edinburgh, the mudguard breakers at Fountainpark would be a strong contender.
Rosie - oh yes those are bad! They should also get a special prize for removing the decent sheffield stands when they added in the new restaurants.
Especially, given that I have seen all the bike parking spaces full at Fountainpark. So no shortage of use.
Yep. We parked at Fountainpark recently. The kids bikes went sideways on the wheel-twisters (so not twisting the wheels) & my bike on the fire escape railing.

Apropros of my new adventures in Criteriumland, I was looking around when I left Dobbies today (by infernal combustion…) and the cycle parking shelter I used to use was gone, replaced with a great big fenced enclosure that sure as heck didn't look like a cycle rack anymore.
Does Dobbies have any bike parking now? OpenStreetMap's node is 8 years old and wrong.
None that I've been able to find. I've been using the shopping trolley fence things.
I asked months ago when the construction work at that location was underway and was told that the intention was to replace the cycle parking. I thought it unlikely and seem to have been right.
Still, it's their loss, if they don't want to accommodate twenty riders buying coffee and cake at the end of a run.
Cameron Toll has added more bike parking. Good.
It's the mad two-level wheel-bender insanity like in Waverley. Not so good.
I demonstrated the new Cameron Toll racks to my elder daughter. She immediately suspected that it'll require a fair bit of brute strength to get bike onto the upper layer.
Is it possible to D-lock a bike on the upper layer?
I suppose I better find out. I've e-mailed them sarky congratulations.
Do they still have the normal Sheffield stands round at the WHSmith entrance? Easier to load stuff into panniers when the bike is at ground level and not held by the rims.
