Had a notification for work on Balgreen Road and Baird Drive. No idea what cycleway improvements they're actually doing thought? Perhaps changing the crossing to a toucan?

    Hopefully this link will work:

On the general sheet of cycle/active travel improvements city-wide:
    http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/downloads/file/11063/active_travel_infrastructure_improvements_2018_19
See point 30 on the pdf, Roseburn to Gyle - main route (QuietRoute 8) : Quiet Street improvements and new crossings.

I expect it is something to do with that job of work.

Looks like they're installing a dropped kerb on the traffic calming build out presumably for bikes heading west on Baird drive hopefully that means they're finally fixing that crossing.

    That ‘after 20 years’ “finally”?

    ... And the taketh away

New "SLOW" sign and rumble strips on the path past the tram stop. So that's slippy bouncy surface installed just where you want maximum braking.

After all that work at the crossing still just a pedestrian crossing, not a toucan.

Not sure they're finished yet. It looks like there are two points for adding another pole on the other side from the current one.

@paulmilne: they were still working in the area when I last passed by. Maybe they are getting the pavement works done first? Or have all the works been cleared?

I could be wrong. There are still wire barriers up on Baird Drive, but the crossing itself seems clear and no traffic control. But I might have missed new poles that could house bicycle lights. I'll have a look on the way home tonight.

Fencing still up around the bit of dropped kerb they’ve made but no sign of any work being done. Does everything across the city stop for the festival?

There is what looks like a footing for an additional pole on each pavement, at the other side of the crossing from the main signal pole (i.e. on the left, rather than on the right where the current poles are). They're currently covered by some kind of small metal hatch. Unless someone can suggest other potential uses for those, I'd say it looks highly possible that these could end up being for bicycle lights.

@Stickman: Pretty much, yes - hadn't you noticed?

@ejstubbs, yes I noticed the new hatch-covered holes, I agree that is most likely what they are for. Especially now it looks like there are new mixed-use markings coming up from the dropped curb on Baird Drive.

This little improvement operation seems to be taking a looong time to work through. I'm not sure the whole no road works thing during the festival is valid outside the city centre.

In other news, 5 men digging one hole by the bicycle track on Stenhouse Drive this morning, 1 man down in the hole actualy digging, 4 men standing around watching.

  17. @paulmilne One van parked and blocking the shared path, with two men (one of whom kept risking causing an accident by stepping out from behind the van into the very narrow strip of clear path left clear) when I passed yesterday just after 4pm.

The crossing is now fully toucanised. The additional holes noted previously are now home to a couple of short poles with crossing activation buttons on them, but the only actual indication of the crossing status is on the bigger button box attached to the main poles, which seems a little bit daft.

The short route across the pavement to the speed table at the mouth of Baird Drive now has shared use markings on the ground. However, access to the dropped kerb a few yards further along Baird Drive, which is marked with white arrows on the carriageway as the way to go if cycling westbound, is currently blocked by what looks like a collection of temporary fencing and bollards which just haven't been removed yet - and which have been there for some weeks now, which is pretty <rule 2> poor IMO.

A moment of silence for all those rule breakers over the years who will now return to a life of law and order...

Fencing is all gone and it’s fully open now. You’d think they could’ve just replaced the indicator box with a toucan style one but alas that wouldn’t produce as many exciting consultations.

It's a nice crossing, much better than before. I also liked the bike ramp for joining Baird drive.

There's also a new crossing in Murrayfield park.

Indeed, found it a bit odd the QR8 signage still tells you to go round via the road instead of the nice path next to the Water of Leith though!

Hopefully they start the rest of the work on QR8 soon - the other non-toucan crossing is pretty tight.
