Government is defeated again in motion on general election

As expected, Boris Johnson has suffered another big loss, with the Commons rejecting his motion calling for a general election.

Johnson says the government has “an abundance of proposals”. But he does now want to share them with the media.

He says he will discuss ideas with Varadkar. He wants changes to the political declaration, as well as to the withdrawal agreement.

Implicit in Mr Varadkar’s words was the understanding that if Mr Johnson thinks he can run an election campaign blaming an intransigent EU for forcing a no-deal Brexit, there would be no amicable sit-down afterwards to hammer out the free trade deal Mr Johnson wants. The Dublin conference is a warning that the rupture could become a permanent rift at the heart of the western world.

As someone who did more classics than me (@JohnMcGahon on Twitter) pointed out:

"Varadkar to Johnson: "Securing the ratification in less than thre years is going to be a Herculean task for you. But we do want to be your friend, your ally, your Athena."

When Hercules went mad and killed his children, Athena stopped the disaster from getting worse."

    Bridge between Scotland & Ireland.

It’s a distraction technique to cover bad news, probably this: https://t.co/yFbXyjGQeg

@neddie, you're probably right about that.

The Bridge though is de Pfeffel's equivalent of Trump's Wall. A big symbol that will never be completed but which means whatever his base support wants it to mean.

He's got prior bad form on bridges so it will never happen. There's also the small problem of million of tons of unexploded munitions dumped in the Irish Sea after WW2...

On a morning tour of South Yorkshire, Johnson was also confronted by a woman in Doncaster. “People have died because of austerity and you’ve got the cheek to come here and tell us austerity is over and it’s all good now, we’re going to leave the EU and everything’s going to be great,” she said. “It’s just a fairytale.”

Coppola has pointed out that Johnson’s love of his 1972 mafia film puts him in the company of some of “modern history’s most brutal figures”, including Saddam Hussein and Muammar Gaddafi, among others.

“I feel badly that scenes in a gangster film might inspire any activity in the real world or [provide] encouragement to someone I see is about to bring the beloved United Kingdom to ruin,” he said.

Experts were quick to identify three aspects of the case that should trouble the government. First, the judges spent a large portion of their time exploring possible remedies – what they might determine must happen if they find against the prime minister. In other cases, judges seldom devote effort to discussing remedies if they are not seriously considering finding in favour of the complainant, legal sources say.

Boris Johnson has bemused the United Nations by making a comparison of Brexit to the Greek mythical figure of Prometheus.

A defiant Boris Johnson will use this weekend’s Tory conference in Manchester to double down on his “people v parliament” rhetoric, after a tumultuous week in which he was accused of dangerously inflaming political tensions.
