The Edinburgh Reporter has a news piece on potential increases in car parking charges in Edinburgh. I was particularly struck by this comment:

"We all knew ever since the days of transport guru, David Beggs, that the days of the car in the city centre were numbered. It seems that this is yet another nail in the coffin. However until the public transport system is both perfect and runs for 24 hours there are some people who have no alternative but to use a car to get to work for example."

Peddling the old myth that you can't get about the city unless you have a car. No alternative? They need to get on their bikes...

there are some people who have no cannot convcieve of any alternative but to use a car to get to work for example

Roads space is a finite resource, city centre parking even more so. How do drivers suggest it is rationed other than through charging (I consider congestion to be a charge - time, money, health impacts of idling cars etc). How about an annual lottery for city centre parking spaces? Or only red cars every Monday, blue on Tuesday and so on. How about no parking charges and/or restrictions at all?

Oh, but these are unfair and may impede my timely procession to work!

Sensible suggestions please motorists - not just whinges.

  4. I tihnk it would be an interesting experiment for one month to say there are no parking restrictions anywhere. Let the chaos develop for all to see. Have everyone but the most blinkered motor-fiend realise that it's a crazy idea.

Aren't there some Continental cities (Italy?) where only cars whose number plates start with an even number are allowed in one day then odd numbers the next? I remember reading something about such a scheme to deal with gridlock a few years ago... so colour coding is not *quite* as silly as it sounds! :-o

@Smudge - sounds like the "Beijing olympics" scheme

Blue bikes only on the innocent on Tuesdays. No MTBs on a Thursday, fixies only allowed heading eastbound, recumbents must be accompanied by a man walking in front waving a red flag.

Now now Kaputnik, you can't discriminate towards the invisible bikes like that.

"Parking ticket slump leaves city facing £1.2m revenue shortfall"

"Parking attendants handed out fewer tickets throughout the year but also saw a huge drop in the number of fines issued over November and December due to the wintry weather."

Well it's been said before on here - if people parked 'properly' there'd be no fine income. Most curious business model relying on 'criminality'!
