Earlier this year I read about a scheme to have allotments in disused barges on canals. This initiative sounds good too though.

"Earlier this year I read about a scheme to have allotments in disused barges on canals."

    Missed that one!

It's about time something useful was done with all that land - there's already an orchard there.

It would be good to get a through route to Myreside Road re-instated.

    Is to be no more.

We did know it was temporary, but now closure date of sept. 2014 set.

Sad, as so much work done to transform the space. It's an amazing suntrap too. Can't imagine another site would have all benefits of the current layout. (best bit is the kids play on their own in the orchard while grownups garden).

Our office have been going out doing work there for last couple of years on team "community investment" days. Never managed to get along to one myself.

    royaledinburghcommunitygardens.wordpress.com is no longer available.

The authors have deleted this site.

That is a shame indeed. There's a lot of interesting history attached to the place, too, such as the metal footbridge hidden behind the tall wall of the railway bridge at Myreside Road. Back then it wasn't proper that local residents should have to see the insane making their way between the Royal Ed and Craig House.

This is the new (web)site: http://www.royaledinburghcommunitygardens.org.uk/

@kaputnik one of the really good things about the project has been the wide range of people working on it.

@SRD: I was part of a volunteer team from work recently. Before that i never knew the place even existed. I was surprised as the size of the site, and even more surprised that it hadn't already been sold off for development given its location

The good thing is that they're not selling it off, but redeveloping it within the NHS.

Positive noises coming via the Cyrenians (who co-ordinated the gardens) about the site redevelopment. Still somewhat intangible at present, because it is quite early on, but encouraging.

Happened to be wandering through last night. The west end of the site has been flattened and has HERAS fencing all round, blocking off the established cut-through to Myreside. The allotment and bowling green haven't been dug up yet but that looks imminent.

So no access through the site any more, or no access from the Myreside end.

I shall be digging this garden on Friday. I am very well disposed to the NHS and looking forward to a good lok around the grounds of the Ed.
