I thought @unhurt’s Russian cousin had one on at Summerhall on Saturday?

Any local reviews? £65 - 12000 Schmerbers of waterproofing, breathable as polyester not nylon. Red, yellow, Navy or Black. £65. I managed a ten per cent discount playing their tombola spin the wheels thing. Not payday TIL thurs tho

I possess a variety of rain capes/ponchos in a number of different colours. Mostly "polyamide" (coated polyester?) and one waxed cotton duck made by Carradice of course. The Carradice is my favourite, but the others are lighter to carry (not always a good thing being light though if the breeze gets up).

Rain capes/ponchos don't need to be breathable as air circulates from underneath as you cycle. Also keep saddle, bars and saddlebag dry - as long as bike has mudguards, rider stays dry too. In very wet weather shoe covers and/or walking gaiters are a good idea also.

Polyamide is the generic name for Nylon and also a lie as it's not made by polymerising amides any more.

@IWRATS, a quick interwebs search reveals that polyamide and Nylon are different fabrics: though they may look similar visually depending on how they are woven.

All hail the internets. I was referring to the substance not the fabric. What a tangled web we weave when first we practice to produce condensation polymers.

I suppose nylon (or rather, Nylon®) is a DuPont brand name for a certain polymer made of artificial polyamide in fabrics (and other applications). Whereas polyamide is a family of molecules which apparently includes naturally occurring proteins found in substances such as wool and silk...

In short, Nylon® is polyamide, but polyamide isn't necessarily Nylon®. Though my rain capes/ponchos are probably "nylon" just not using the brand name. They are definitely not made of either wool or silk.

This poncho is made from wool (or possibly acrylic, it was the 1960s):

I have a poncho / tent-thing from Decathlon which fits into a nice small package (with strap to attach to saddle should you wish) and ties onto handlebars while cycling to keep the rain off my knees. Not at all elegant but has kept me dry enough to be civilised at work after commuting in downpours. £20 ish I think.

Like this one https://www.decathlon.co.uk/500-cycling-rain-poncho-black-id_8397113.html but mine has opposite colours i.e. yellow body and black hood, which doesn't seem to be available any more.

Stupid question? - Can you signal with a poncho on? In my minds eye, I always associate cycling ponchos with those on heavily laden bikes clocking up mammoth miles on epic tours on country roads.....

@twinspark, think that is good question. This one has clips that create a kind of arm, so indicating possible

every few decades or so an unexpected liminal space appears where normal rules just don't apply

the last big one in 89-91 saw me regularly sporting an acrylic poncho successfully haggled at camden town market

i mention this trivia because i really feel a significant fresh liminal time may have just emerged

    not yer usual samhain shenanigans

@bax, is this new liminal space also poncho related?
