Great lecture on strong Scottish connection to slavery particularly in Jamaica where there were 3000 Campbells in the phone book 2009. Prof Palmer’s mother was a lamond and whilst his DNA is 80 per cent Nigerian it is 3-4% Shetland Viking.

I had wanted to go to the lecture which I think was at the royal society during the festival. Prof Palmer said when he turned up for that lecture he was met at the door and asked what he was there for. He said to give a lecture. When they asked at what time? He said 2pm, no they said you cant be as Prof Sir Geoff Palmer is giving the lecture then.

Dundas was a total bar steward. Michael Fry trying to minimise this in Sunday Times. Geoff wants plaque in St. Andrews Sq changed to say - Dundas delayed abolition by 15 years. 10th viscount Melville not keen

We discussed Rabbie Burns going to work as slave driver in Jamaica

Great to attend a lecture where the lecturer is at the top of their game. Humbling also that Prof Palmer’s main field is not history but Brewing and Distilling

Nice glass of wine from my union

Good cycle home on the lecky bike.

Don’t think I’ve ever been in his presence, but heard him on radio and TV.

    Impressive work and life.

Great guy. For many years he would host the African studies scholarship auction. Helped lots of students. And inspired more.

For the beer people on here, he taught the brewers at Stewarts and Brewdog

I have a cold so taking the bus to work. Spotted on North Bridge that you can see both the statue to Dundas and the Edinburgh martyrs' obelisk from the front of the top deck.

If it was up to me Dundas's column would be sunk into a huge shaft so that Dundas himself appeared just below eye level where he belongs.

Aside from all racist and colonial terribleness he also divorced his wife and kept her property (Melville Castle Hotel)
