An officer told him he had to reverse his bicycle behind the white line where cars were supposed to stop, said Arthur. “I told the officer that I would be putting myself in danger if I reversed because a small HGV was sitting directly behind me and I would end up in the driver’s blind spot if I followed his instructions.

“I explained to the officer that usually there are cycle box lanes ahead of vehicle stop lines to protect cyclists and because there is a lack of one, I was using my common sense to avoid putting myself in danger.”

Ugh. That was an unpleasant read. An unpleasant intersection of racism and anti cyclist stuff with most of the driver being the former by the sound. (Also a good illustration of how this sort of nitpick policing affects minority groups more.)

Whole thing totally disgusting obviously although what somehow particularly annoyed me is that the first police act was not 'reasonable advice, unreasonably targeted' but just complete nonsense. There is no law that says you have to reverse behind a stop line when a light turns red. Either - by the strictest interpretation of the law - he got there before the lights changed and is fine to stay there or he 'ran a red light' and should have been told off/fined. Making up and enforcing some in-between pretend law is just an excuse to boss people around (and make them unsafe).

Funny how 'observant' some officers become when presented with a bike ridden by someone from a racial minority.
Meanwhile assorted vehicles will encroach stop lines and ASLs with impunity.
Know that was London but looking at what happened in Fife to Sheku Bayoh.

I don't know about London but in all the time I lived in Paris I never once saw a white person emptying the contents of their boot into the street under the gaze of the politzei. Saw plenty Arabs and Africans doing it.
