BJ has been speaking at the UN recently on climate. I know he's slightly mad but is this for real?
Not even as if the neighbouring island is in same trade block.

BORIS Johnson’s plan to turn the Isle of Man into a giant roundabout connecting a network of tunnels between Scotland, Ireland and England is “not credible”, the architect behind the Celtic Crossing has warned.

Over the weekend, it emerged that the Prime Minister was keen on a new plan to use the island to connect four roads from Stranraer, Belfast, Liverpool and Heysham in Lancashire.

For example: sustainable transport people complain about large 5-seater vehicles that are systematically under-occupied (“1 ton to transport 1 person!”). It doesn’t make sense right?

Expect, it does. *From an industry perspective* it does: it's essental for economies of scale

Boris Johnson must urgently take control of the UK’s presidency of vital UN climate talks, amid a shower of green policy setbacks and growing concern over the lack of a coherent all-government climate strategy, senior international figures have said.

The Cop26 climate summit is viewed as one of the last chances to put the world on track to meet the goals of the 2015 Paris climate agreement, of holding global heating well below 2C, and preferably no more than 1.5C, above pre-industrial levels. There are just over six months left before the crunch talks are scheduled to begin in Glasgow in November.

Boris Johnson’s ambitions for Cop26, dubbed the “green games”, this year? Well, in this case, it’s the raw data we should look to – and it tells a deeply alarming story.

Green Alliance’s latest tracker of government climate policy shows that, following a decade of hard-won carbon reductions (which should rightly be celebrated), unless there’s a serious step-change in climate action, the UK’s emissions may start to creep up again. It takes time for policy to take effect and, even on a generous reading of recent government initiatives, the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions will still be nearly 40% higher in 2030 than where we need them to be to give us the best chance of meeting the legally binding 2050 net-zero target.

The UK’s climate champion, Nigel Topping, says he is stubbornly optimistic that the world will converge on an agreement to forge a transition to a net zero future at the UN climate talks later this year.

Topping’s role in the run-up to the UN Cop26 climate summit, to be held in Glasgow in November, is to drive and encourage action from businesses, civil society, and local and regional government on climate change.

Councils in the Glasgow area have pledged to plant 18m trees – equivalent to 10 trees for every resident – as the city prepares to host a global climate summit later this year.

The Clyde Climate Forest (CCF) project hopes to increase tree cover in urban areas of Glasgow to 20% and ensure that a fifth of the region’s rural landscape is forested or planted with native woodland over the next decade.

    It's a start...

But even a 3 mile daily commute by car requires about 50 trees to absorb the equivalent in CO2

In the lead-up to November’s crucial Cop26 climate change conference, the government has been rather better at setting eye-catching CO2 reduction targets than taking the necessary actions to meet them. This month, however, there have been signs of an overdue sense of urgency kicking in when it comes to creating and safeguarding green jobs.

    COP26

Today’s lackluster announcement does not bode well for November when the U.K. hosts a critically important climate conference in Glasgow. Many delegates at the 26th United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of the Parties—known as COP26—will not be impressed by the U.K.’s continuation of its road building program.

However, delegates won’t have to look too far for a more positive approach: citing the climate emergency, Wales recently announced a halt to future road building.

Mr Shapps said the government planned to use sustainable fuel to fly home some participants in November's COP26 conference.

However, critics say reductions in emissions will not be achievable without reducing the amount we fly.

Green Party MP Caroline Lucas described the government's approach to aviation as "a flight of fantasy" that relied on technology that was still being developed.

"The government should not hoodwink us," she told the BBC.

It would allow the first minister to present a strong pro-climate agenda in advance of the Cop26 climate talks in Glasgow this November, and outvote anti-independence parties in Holyrood.

Got an awful suspicion that special conference vote will torpedo any deal the Green leadership agree to, they tend to be somewhat more accommodating than some of the crustier members of the party. Shame if it does, no doubt the SNP would have had to agree to somewhat more robust active travel spending as part of any deal.

Drilling for North Sea oil is at the centre of a political row which could undermine ambitious targets to reach net zero in the next two decades as Scotland prepares to host the global UN summit, COP26.

The IPCC’s report means all the evidence that will ever be needed is now in place. “The continued dithering to address climate change is no longer about the lack of scientific evidence, but directly tied to a lack of political will,” says Kristina Dahl of the Union of Concerned Scientists.

That means political leaders are now in the dock and the vital UN Cop26 summit in Glasgow in November may be the last hearing at which they can avoid the judgment of history.
