Capitalists may be greedy, but they aren't stupid. They can see that climate change is bad for business for all sorts of reasons, and they also see that there's money to be made in combatting it. Banks like Goldman Sachs, HSBC, BNP Paribas are jostling to get a slice of the trillions that are even now being invested in the transition to a carbon-free economy. Blackrock, one of the world's biggest asset funds, says investment opportunities of $3-7 trillion a year will be unleashed by agreement at COP26.

Ah well, if the economists thought Paris was a success and the bright minds of capital are now on the way to sort things out, huzzah huzzah the world is saved. The sarcastic eyerolling meme I'm too tired to look for goes here.

I generally don't care for "man, what happened to you" sentiment, but Macwhirter really does seem to have gone downhill since the indyref.

Forecast for weekend - more heavy rain, more low pressure, some gales ... is there a spring tide in first 2 weeks of November?

For those unaware of the meteorological & hydraulic quirks of the Clyde estuary

    - when there has been heavy rain in Lammermuirs & Campsies the water levels increase (with a small time lag) on the Clyde & Kelvin in the city centre
    - the upstream flow of a high tide can clearly be seen right up to the tidal weir (recently fixed?) on Glasgow Green
    - a strong SW gale enhances the rising tide priming the potential for flooding
    - a low pressure area enhances the tidal rise

The ability of the city to handle a tidal surge has been diminished
    - quays & channel East of the Kelvin not been dredged in decades (the 'Torpedo' Express converted ferry was reputed to be settled on a pile of silt at low tide)
    - Princes Dock, Yorkhill Basin &c - all providing surge capacity have been filled in with SEC paving them over for car parking!

    Rain dance anyone?

We do have cycling and walking access along Finnieston Street, although (no irony obviously) the large Nuffield Gym has closed for the month, as their members can no longer drive there.....

One major hazard warning is that there are 2 'speed humps' to ride over. These are not compliant with highway standards and are painted steel chequerplate - cross with care

The lack of thought also extends to the access to the Squinty Bridge at both ends no 'gap' in the barriers to ride through

The Edinburgh COP26 Coalition are planning to march for two hours tomorrow, setting off from The Meadows at 11am.

Their route will take them along George IV Bridge, Bank Street, North Bank Street, Market Street, Jeffrey Street and Canongate.

The group is then due to arrive at the Scottish Parliament at 1pm, where they will hold a rally at which overseas visitors will make speeches on a variety of topics including the use of fossil fuels, nature and biodiversity, food security and farming, and climate finance and compensation.

I was at the Village Hotel yesterday, where I use the gym. The place was crawling with police. I thought there had been a murder or something, but I was told that the hotel is full of police for COP26 - there isn't enough accommodation for them in Glasgow.

Re drafting in the police from all over the UK- when the G7 was held in Gleneagles, Edinburgh was full of police to pick up the odd protester. Their vans were parked on Lothian Road and it was like being under foreign occupation. We were told to dress down and look as uncorporate as possible. Occasionally protesters would chuck themselves into the road and hold up the buses, which led to resigned eye rolling.

The rammies were somewhat more extensive than that. They shut down the city centre. We weren't allowed out of our office in George Street for the best part of 6 hours while there was a stand-off, fracas and what the press call "clashes" between police and G8 protestors in Rose Street.

For once, Rose Street was properly pedestrianised. Apart from the police folk on their horses.

Saw my first motorcade heading through Corstorphine this morning: about 10 black SUVs with a few police outriders.
