We recognise that alongside the shift to zero emission vehicles, a sustainable future for road transport will require wider system transformation, including support for active travel, public and shared transport, as well as addressing the full value chain impacts from vehicle production, use and disposal.

Can the world really withstand the massive amount of scrappage required as everyone is encouraged to go electric?
Big business should have to do recycling. Tons of 'green stuff' automatically making older tech unwanted just doesn't work resource wise. Bikes of course are examples of things that can go for decades. E-bikes probably won't. (Obscure brand ones I mean).

Cop26 will close without even one major economy aligned with keeping global heating to 1.5C, according to the world’s most respected climate analysis coalition.

A study of 36 countries by Climate Action Tracker shows progress has been made at Glasgow, though not nearly enough to keep the world from dangerous levels of heating.

Major emitters such as Europe, the US and China have increased their ambition compared with two years ago, but their emissions-cutting pledges remain insufficient to reach the Paris agreement’s target.

Other nations, including Brazil, Australia, Saudi Arabia and Russia, remain so far off course that they are pushing the planet towards 4C above pre-industrial levels.

Looking at ScotGov which has easily won the PR war despite not joining Danish chaired group Beyond Oil and Gas Alliance.
With Johnson and Sharma the bar is so low (as Joyce Macmillan writes in Scotsman today) that the FM can out PR anything coming in from shambles in south.

But think failure to join is pretty poor as poorer countries activists have been begging for some leadership here. Yes I know Norway won't sign up either but that shouldn't stop Scotland - even though it will be overuled by UK - as will signatory Wales.

Was trying to get handle on Environment at ScotGov

    https://www.gov.scot/about/who-runs-government/cabinet-and-ministers/minister-for-environment-and-land-reform/

Roles are split of course with 3 x SNP MSPs:

Mairi McAllan MSP - Minister for Environment and Land Reform

    Michael Matheson
    - Cabinet Secretary for Net Zero, Energy and Transport

Mairi Gougeon - Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and Islands

And then add in recent Green appointments .

Lorna Slater - Minister for Green Skills, Circular Economy and Biodiversity

    Patrick Harvie
    - Minister for Zero Carbon Buildings, Active Travel and Tenants' Rights

So we have 5 people on this role. I think that might be a quite high number for any government, anywhere.

Bob Ward, policy and communications director at the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, has weighed in on the new draft:

“This text is still pretty good and one I hope that all countries can embrace. It continues to request countries to deliver more ambitious pledges next year.

“Countries will leave Glasgow painfully aware that collectively current pledges for emissions cuts by 2030 are not ambitious enough. They are not aligned with the goal of the Paris Agreement of holding the rise in warming to well below 2C degrees, and to pursue efforts to limit it to 1.5C. The draft text also still calls on all countries to accelerate efforts towards the phase-out of unabated coal power and inefficient fossil fuel subsidies.

“Importantly the UK presidency has now published draft text that outlines a good process for agreeing a significant increase in investment in developing countries to help them make their economies zero-carbon and climate-resilient. It is time for countries to stop arguing over the text and to start taking the action that has been promised, particularly to increase the flows of financial support to developing countries.”

Alok Sharma concludes his remarks saying the “text is imperfect” but that there is “consensus and support for it”. He then adjourns the meeting to give everyone a little break, but promises to start the final session very shortly.

Last minute row over coal phaseout as Cop26 approaches finish – live updates

    https://www.theguardian.com/environment/live/2021/nov/13/cop26-live-third-draft-text-expected-as-climate-talks-go-into-overtime

Somehow India was allowed to propose a very last minute amendment that watered down the commitments on phasing out coal.

COP26 climate deal includes historic reference to fossil fuels but doesn't meet urgency of the crisis

Final #COP26 text leaves 1.5 degrees on life support & fails the Global South - $100bn still not delivered, no $$ mechanism for #LossAndDamage. Global leaders have failed. But it doesn’t end here - we’ll mobilise like never before to put #ClimateJustice at heart of future process

Meanwhile, others argue we need fewer cars on the road - walking and cycling more could also be among the changes we make.

Greta Thunberg has said the eventual agreement struck at COP26 was "very vague" with many loopholes.

The 18-year-old - who came to Glasgow for the summit - said it only succeeded in "watering down the blah blah blah."

Tory motion for debate at the Scottish Parliament this week:

Graham Simpson: Delivering promised road infrastructure across Scotland

That the Parliament recognises that driving in most parts of Scotland is a necessity; believes that the Cooperation Agreement between the Scottish Government and the Scottish Green Party Parliamentary Group should not prevent or delay the delivery of any future road projects, and calls upon the Scottish Government to reaffirm its commitment to dualling the A9 and A96 and commit to upgrading the A1, A75, A77, A82, A83 and A90.

Not many buses in Achiltibuie, maybe the post bus!

But no need to drive in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dublin, Dundee, Humberside.

Looks like SNP Bad, Greens Worse mischief making.

It will be interesting to see how N ‘I think COP26 was important’ S handles this.

‘We agree that in some parts of Scotland alternatives to private car use are poor or non existent. We will continue to maintain and improve the road network as necessary. In addition we will ensure provision of and access to PT is improved significantly. However we are aware that most journeys and transport choices are made in urban areas where, in most cases, the present infrastructure that has evolved over decades seriously disadvantages people choosing and or wanting to choose walking, bus/train use and cycling. So will now be putting considerable time and resources into realising the legally binding commitment to reduce car mileage by 20%.’

    Or something.

    Really??

THE SCOTTISH Conservatives are calling on the SNP Government to commit to support improvements to crucial trunk roads – amid claims they have been “neglected” since Nicola Sturgeon’s party came to power 14 years ago.

It doesn't have to be true, just truthy, Tories love a bit of truthiness.

Tories sensing that the petrolhead vote needs shoring up. Reckon they already have most of those voters though? The equivalent who vote SNP are likely to be put off by the union flag waving routine? Are they hoping that the "Ah good I can keep driving everywhere I just need to go electric" brigade will vote Tory as a protest if trunk road building slows down? I mean, I suppose it might happen, but seems a bit unlikely. Perhaps hoping to convert a few current Labour voters who are also keen drivists?

People reading that in many ways. Does force other politicians to make a statement on whether they think one more oilfield is OK while telling people in coal producing countries they should change their ways.

Notice the low key reaction to what is happening in BC?

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/live/2021/nov/18/canada-storm-vancouver-air-force-arrives-to-help-residents-in-british-columbia-live

I think that apart from the actual severity of damage done to Canada's western infrastructure the actual reaction says we are 'resigned' to this sort of event. That is a worrying next step.

    'What can we do?'
'No-one from UK is involved so not too bad.'
' Canada is far away from us...'
'Not as if we are connected...(!)'

'Global Britain' would like to think itself interested / a friend of a country with loads of Scottish connections. In the past such events would have resonated politically. I think they still do to the public with friends and relations there but this news is being downplayed. Wonder how it would have been reacted to if it had happened during COP26?
@SRD will be getting a transatlantic slant on it although NFL is closer to us than to BC.

I have cousins in the Vancouver area - one of my uncles and his wife (now both dead) moved out there before I was born. I'm not in contact with my cousins beyond being friends on Facebook...
