    Some of you will remember me talking about my elderly downstairs neighbours who were keen cyclists. This blog is by one of their sons. I think a number of you will appreciate it:

    "This blog isn't about fast times, distances or athletic challenge (there are no shortage of those for anyone interested) but rather a simple journey, on foot, through the landscape that surrounds us. "

    The two blogs that appear on the link (there are many more in the menus) are both Renfrewshire. The second one rename’s the folly in a clever way. He focuses on the McDowall family of slave owners but the Sempill’s themselves were a most bloodthirsty lot beforehand.

    He writes very well and picks some great routes. His lack of watch or planned route (in detail) is not something my lot would ever agree to so it is nice that his son goes with him.

    To complete the triumvirate, Charles Sprawson who wrote Haunts of the Black Masseur (regarded as the best book about swimming) just died. His disciple Alex Preston recently swam the Hellespont to raise money for Sprwason’s medical treatment. Sprawson’s first attempt to swim the HELLESPONT was dashed on the rocks as he timed his departure at the same point as the ferry left.

    This is very fine writing and also good photography (apart from the peacock buttrfly, obvs). I think about running quite differently to cycling in that I will allow consideration of pace and style, as well as an element of competition. All are forbidden in my cycling.

    I'd like to read some stuff by this person outwith summer, to see how that changes their approach.

    The 'cut' they talk about is a well-known recreational cycling route. I know nothing of Renfrewshire and was quite tempted to ride it for investigation purposes. I definitely will now.

    @diarmid is very familiar I think with the hills south of the cut. Walking i venture rather than cycling across.

    There is talk in the slower Fietsclub posse about the five ferries which might take in Wemyss Bay.

    Movement through landscape/psycho geography. Don’t cha just love it

    Oh well done, thanks. You were quite right, I like the pace and poise of the writer.

    @gembo

    I do love it. Walked from Kelvingrove to Glagow Green yesterday. Phase change man, phase change.
