Posted by Rosie on Sheriffhall thread.

Spokes members Cllr Claire Miller and Alison Johnstone MSP are organising a Green Party protest outside the Scottish Parliament this Monday 13 Jan at 11am. Spokes is not party-political but we support the aims of this campaign.

As part of the Edinburgh City Region Deal, the Scottish Government is providing £120m to rebuild Sheriffhall roundabout as a flyover. With the recently declared Climate Emergency, there are now growing calls for the £120m to be used for sustainable and active travel rather than to facilitate easier motor travel and thereby in-crease traffic levels (as has recently happened with the new Forth Bridge, which was intended – supposedly – not to increase traffic levels, but where traffic growth is happening).

The original plans for Sheriffhall were dreadful for walking and cycling but thanks to massive Spokes efforts (including appearing at the Scottish Parliament) the plans now include high-quality cycle/pedestrian crossings. A major problem still remains, however, as the Scottish Government is unwilling to include cycleroutes between the roundabout and important destinations, such as the Bioquarter and Midlothian towns – we call the scheme an oasis of cycling excellence in a desert of underprovision.

The campaign is fully aware that the current plans for Sheriffhall include high quality cycle facilities, and will call for high quality active travel crossings (and routes linking Midlothian, the Bioquarter and other destinations) to be provided even if the motor flyover is scrapped - costing only a fraction of the £120m.

“even if the motor flyover is scrapped”

How likely is this given business as usual politics is still the reality over any declarations of ‘climate emergency’?

May be worth emphasising this bit:

protest outside the Scottish Parliament this Monday 13 Jan at 11am.

No need to visit the roundabout itself.

Frenchy, cuh-mon, who would be mad enough to go to the roundabout?

The Lothians MSP said: “The council estimates that congestion costs Edinburgh £225 million a year, yet they and the Scottish Government insist on repeating the same failed mistakes of the past.

“Since the 1960s we’ve known that if you build more roads, they fill up with cars. That’s why the proposal to turn Sheriffhall roundabout into a spaghetti junction isn’t an upgrade, it’s a step backwards, especially when we now know 60,000 cars are coming into the city every morning.

“This is the 21st century and we are in a climate emergency. £120 million could go a long way in transforming our capital for the future.

“It could pay for 120 miles of segregated cycle paths, for example. It could boost our bus lanes and park-and-ride offerings to get our city moving again, instead of sitting in gridlock every day.

“The SNP in Edinburgh council and Holyrood need to match their rhetoric with real transformative change if we are to build a sustainable future. That means ditching the failed old ways like spaghetti junctions.”

Idea for a race: Start anywhere you like - one circuit of Sheriffhall, one circuit of Picardy Place and back to the starting point.

Bypass congestion is so bad that a new junction won’t make significantly more people decide to drive along it, but it will improve public transport from Midlothian and make the cycle route to the Royal Infirmary safer.

Good one Johnny Boy. Sock it to those hippies.

it will improve public transport from Midlothian and make the cycle route to the Royal Infirmary safer.

Nice one Johnny Boy. You're onto a winner here.

    Oh no, wait a minute...

the problem with Sheriffhall is that public transport is also snarled up and people just try to find ways round it

    but then you said

Bypass congestion is so bad that a new junction won’t make significantly more people decide to drive along it

So people try to avoid it because of congestion but alleviating that congestion won't make more people drive through it? Your argument is all becoming a bit incoherent Johnny. Try again and this time DON'T undermine your own arguments.

Sadly he will churn out another similar piece next week. He does them in his sleep.

So, by that logic - slap down a bus lane and install a bridge for bikes and pedestrians - bang £110m saved! Just think - pot hole filling a-go-go. Every traffic light could be re-phased. Gullies could be cleared by stout British yeomen. Puny non-native species banished from our pavements.

I mean - that's what the Tories desire, isn't it? If all they want is better bus and cycle access from Midlothian then the guardians of fiscal rectitude surely wouldn't want to waste funds needlessly upgrading a big roundabout, when they have identified so many other pressing needs.

“that's what the Tories desire, isn't it?“

I think they just want to keep bamboozling ‘the people’ with populist falsehoods, illogicalities and more of ‘more of the same’.

Maybe more people will stop being taken in.

McLellan will have to try harder to join the first division -

£110m would buy every person currently commuting from Midlothian to Edinburgh a bus pass for 10 years.

What would that do for congestion?

With the likes of Macklin Motors offering a "brand new SUV" for £255 per month, what chance is there...?

Even the new Landrover Defender isn't suitable for off-roading. So I think we can safely say 100%

Due to the elevated driving position, SUVs are good for seeing over the roofs of ordinary cars, the better to survey the stationary traffic jam while idling. High wheelbase means driving at speed over traffic bumps / sleeping polis is nae bother at all. Also the very high front end (and possibly bull bars) is more efficient at killing pedestrians who dare to cross the road, or who foolishly get in the way of pavement parking.

Are they like Printers I see Vinnie Jones selling one for £19995? But then due to fuel consumption the ink is extortionate?

@gembo, well they are big, clumsily designed boxes with a slew of fancy features most folk never use, that sit around gathering dust most of the time. So the comparison is apt.

Folk could have just bought a giant one of these instead?
