seat post pannier rack

    I just bought a new decathlon MTB which was on sale, and didn't think enough about what I needed from it apart from the discount. I plan to commute on it on icy days through winter with studded tyres and do some off-road touring on it in summer.

    It's just arrived I've noticed it has no fittings for pannier racks/ mudguards at all.

    All the seat post pannier racks I can find seem to have 10kg weight limits (e.g.). I think I was packing around 22kg on my last touring trip on my gravel bike so 10kg is nowhere near enough.

    Something like this looks very heavy, but might work, however the bike is aluminium with very chunky seat stays and the metal feels quite thin, so I'm not sure putting small and tight metal clamps against them is the best idea.

    Does anyone have any experience of using seat post pannier racks well past their weight recommendations? Or have any other solutions that don't involve extremely expensive frame bags?

    When I was small some of my bikes' mudguards had stays which ended with eyelets which attached to the wheel axle outside the main locknut...

    Hamax-style seats can carry reasonable weights, so as long as your seat post was strong enough to support the clamp you could then attach a rack to some Hamax-style fitting prongs...

    Don't know if you can still buy old fashioned racks that mount onto the hub spindle / wheel nuts?

    Or perhaps you can buy / fashion an adapter that mounts on the hub spindle and connects to the rack stays?

    There was a Blackburn EX model using QR a while back.
    Using p-clips is ok though not as neat as braze ons.

    Also... I have a seat post rack in basement if interested / suitable to try.

    Cheers! I've got "Boost" skewers, which I've never heard of before, I think they're a bit too thick to find anything to mount onto them, and there's an unnecessary protruding ridge above them (where pannier mounting points should be) that would probably get in the way of anything that could utilise them. Which is annoying because the Blackburn EX skewer model looks absolutely perfect otherwise.. Will keep that in mind for other bikes..

    @wingpig Having had a look at the Hamax stuff (I think I now understand how it works..), that could form a decent, if slightly expensive, solution I think. If I somehow got this thing to support the underside of a seat post rack just to give it more support (cable ties could work..).

    I'm also seeing that most normal racks have pitiful weight recommendations, that I've routinely exceeded. (I've had 80kg on one of mine before). Perhaps the seat post racks provide similarly conservative estimates...

    @LaidBack I'm due to be passing very near your store on Saturday anyway, so if I could come and have a little play with it and if it seems vaguely sturdy I'd be very interested, cheers!
