  1. Or at least, I will be. First weekend in March we're off on a jaunt. Bikes, beer, bikes, chips and mayo, bikes.

Hoping to meet up with the chap behind Amsterdamize for a pint as well.

Ooh lucky you, that sounds cool, make sure you buy some Reypanaer vsop cheese, it's delish.

Me, I'm off on a work trip to Lyon in a coupla weeks, main treat for me is going to a restaurant in the middle of an abattoir that specialises in interesting things done with offal. And I'm driving so I have to experience it without the sheen of red wine. *shudder*

May give the Velo'v a go if it take my credit card (The velib refused to)

  3. Ah, Lyon... I was a student there for a year. '96-'97. Went back a few years ago, driving through on the way to Venice, and ate at Cafe des Federations - another offally good place. Superb it was. And we were the only non-Lyonnais in there.

Will be a first visit to Lyon for me, but I've loved pretty much everywhere I've ever been in France, so looking forward to it. Any other recommendations? (although I think I may only have one afternoon free, as I'm driving a vanload of journalists about the rest of the time. Le sigh.)

Sadly my only experience of Amsterdam is going through Schipol on the way to a food show in Cologne.

  5. Schipol is my only experience of the 'dam so far as well - really looking forward to this.

As for Lyon, you HAVE to go to Vieux Lyon, start facing the Cathedrale St Jean and walk along the cobbled street on your left. See if the Smoking Dog pub is still there - was a regular haunt of mine!

Walk or take the Funicular to the big white basilica, the name of which escapes me at the moment, which gives outstanding views, and you can walk back via the huge Roman amphitheatre.

Mind you, this all takes time... :(

Lyon is very industrial, very built up - the old town is definitely the highlight I think. And actually on presq'ile you can walk on massive wide pedestrianised bits between two big squares. Just shows you can do it in a big city.

See, this is just making me want to go back. I think Mel was a little 'meh' about it, but having lived there for a year it means a bit more to me!

Lyon's a fantastic city. The restaurants are superb. We had a 4 day stay there a few years ago and managed to put on the best part of half a stone each.

La Meurniere in Rue Neuve was the best bouchon we went to - first course is a help yourself to as many helpings as you wanted from a large selection of huge bowls of various salads - lentil, pied de mouton, herring, tete de veau... Offal's great. Nomnomnom.

Haven't they got a velib-style scheme as well? It would take a fair bit of cycling to burn off that food, but there are quite a few hills in Lyon to attempt it.

Yep, there's the Velo'v which I fully intend on using on my free afternoon (although may use the funicular too :) ) if it lets me register that is.

The Paris system just stubbornly refused to register my card, and I was looking forward to a red-wine hazed cycle from Les Halles to Nation, was a drizzly walk instead :-/ Maybe it was on strike.

Funny question this, but do Amsterdam/CPH have infrastructural bike share schema like the, or is it a more local shop based?

  8. Not sure, had a hunt around, seems to be shop based at the mo. €10 a day aint bad though.

Didn't have time on the last Lyon visit to try out the Velo'v (and it didn't exist when I was a student). The Velib was great though. Riding to the Eiffel Tower, superb!

I've not been but we're trying to persuade the girls (ages 9 - 13) that Amsterdam would be a great place for a holiday. Any information that would support our point of view would be very welcome.
