I've benefited muchly from kindness/assistance of forumers in recent days. Chdot kindly helped me get my hybrid bike rideable again, but Laidback has now spoiled me for any other bike by letting me try the tandem for a morning commute.

Very pleased to report that the Helios Circe is a joy to ride. I love the hub gears, even though I kept forgetting which lever was up and which was down. And I kept forgetting and shifting while cycling even though I didn't need to. Why does anyone use a derailler for city cycling???? Never again! I made it up Merchiston Ave with stoker weighing in at 18kg and didn't need the lowest gear! And somehow hit exactly the right gear for that long slow uphill from Causewayside to Marchmont Rd that has caused me so much grief in the past. I have never felt I was in the right gear for that on my old hybrid.

While riding I was aware of the extra length of the bike, but didn't find it a problem. It is a little low going up over kerbs though. And I definitely noticed the length/weight while trying to lean it up against walls/take it through doors/gates etc. Of course none of this was helped by having my D-lock (unused since 2001) in a rear pannier (can't let a bike not my own be stolen!!). But it is do-able, even by me and I'm short , lightweight and not over-endowed with upper-body strength.

On a more general note, I'd forgotten how annoying it is to have cars in ASLs - although had one nice one slowly follow me down Salisbury Road as I coasted towards a red light and it didn't try to overtake! Potholes as bad as everyone said -- especially the Dalkeith Road end of Salisbury Rd, and a horrendous one in the middle of Holy Corner that I nearly hit at a really bad angle because cars coming the other way were edging at me in a nasty way.

Feels fabulous to be back on bike, getting a wee bit of exercise for the first time in months, and -- best of all -- on a bike that actually fits me, and feels good to ride.

That is cool, welcome back to two wheels! And I can imagine that ASL ignorers are even more annoying when you are riding a tandem.

And I don't get why derailleurs are so popular either! Probably just fashion and that most people have never known the joy of hubs for city riding.

Hurrah - welcome back to the fold SRD and you'll be much easier to spot as a contraption captain.

And I don't get why derailleurs are so popular either!

we could take this all the way... "I don't get why gears are so popular either" :)

I do sort of agree though, I don't use "most" of the range of gears around town - maybe I use mainly 3 or 4 different ones in a day. However on a different day, with a different headwind and carrying a different load, I will use a different 3 or 4 gears. I also use a lot more when I go out of town on long rides, so it's nice to have them. But I guess that don't count as "around town" cycling!

I used the full range of gears for my old bike (despite being told not to) but am sure they had less range than the hub gears on the tandem (laidback will have to explain what they are - alfine something?). I felt I needed all the gears to deal with loads/hills etc, but the hub gears are so much nicer for riding up behind great queues of traffic, stops, starts etc. Just beautiful. and they change so smoothly... sigh. happiness :)

Halfway along this life's path... well late this afternoon really... I found myself in Princes St turning south for Waverley Station.

You guys really hadn't explained just how stoopid those tracks look. Could they have come up with something more redongculous if they tried?

Got lost on the way to the SQA in Dalkieth, arrived with 2 mins to spare. Got a little less lost on the way back, I was further east on Princes St than I thought which is how I overshot the station. On the train now.

Black 2001 Brompton M6R, Brooks, Edelux. Me in Craghoppers, 7 up teel toe Docs and a Lowe Alpine hat with ear flaps.

Got lost on the way to the SQA in Dalkieth,

    That's the famous Dalkeith effect.

You could have taken an LRT bus for £1.20 you know! Hide Brompton in a bin liner and you'd have been warmly tolerated on board.

...but maybe not the Lowe Alpine hat with ear flaps

The exam board would have put me on a taxi for free but I like riding a bike.

Don't mess with the hat. The memsahib doesn't like it which sufficient reason for wearing it even if it didn't keep my ears cosy.

The ear flaps don't tie under the chin like a trapper John hat, they have internal wires which flip them up and down as does the brim.

As I recollect wee folding bike was confident of the cycle out to Dalkeith and as it turned out with 2 mins to spare he was right to be confident.

I am going to Victoria Quay from Baerno tomoorow - Think will stick to Leith Walk etc etc as tried some side roads in Chesser today and multo icy. Unless anyone knows different? BTW up in the night for a pee and could not see out the dorma windows for snow - big old blizzard, mostly gone this morning.

What I didn't take into account was the 3D nature of the roads round Waverley. My map was 2D so I knew I wanted to be on a the southbound road but I was 50 ft below it. This meant I took a detour west along the south side of the castle before I found a road which looped back round past the Meadows and got me to Dalkeith rd. After that I was fine all the way to Dalkeith.

One thing in Edinburgh's favour are the two large navigation beacons, one shaped like a castle and the other a neighbouring hill.

Lowe Alpine hat with ear flaps

I've got one, for keeping the inevitable rain out when up mountains. Never thought of wearing it on the velocipede.
