I have to admit defeat after another cyclist pointed out that my bike pump was sliding out of the hole in my left pannier.
I have been using a bog-standard double pannier from some random brand on Amazon.

I'd like a nicer version, probably a single, that I could take into the office with a laptop inside. However, I seem to be finding only 3 types: waterproof trekking things, Cath Kidston, or '21 yr old bearded hipster from North London.'

Any suggestions? Bobbin Bikes has some nice-ish ones but limited, and this one from Carradice has the right feel, with a flap to cover the wheel dirt:

I like my Carradice Bureau but it is spendy. I've been using it daily for over a year now and whilst a bit scuffed in places its not showing any wear to bits you'd worry about (bottom of bag, closures etc).

Brooks do nice looking bags but also spendy https://www.brooksengland.com/en_uk/cycle-bags.html

My laptop-capable pannier is a "Union34" or similar - it's in the storage unit just now so can't check. Probably a Planet X experimental purchase. It came with a removable rail for taking off the clips to convert to shoulder use so I am extremely mistrustful of it for transporting and actual laptop. It's on the list for having its clips replaced with Vaude locking ones, firmly bolted on.

DutchBikeBits mostly have the big, black, Bisonyl type of panniers, which is a shame.

How about Fastrider, or Beck, or, or, or? Similar idea to Basil. HBS has about a trillion different models to choose from.

    Or you might try CycleChic:

Either way you can get a nice big bag to take your laptop inside a neoprene pouch.

Thanks for all the suggestions, which I'll have a look at this evening.
also, I hate my thread title, but I was feeling alliterative this morning.

Current panniers can cope with my laptop and its protective bubble case, but that is just about all that go in, and it all gets a bit faffy.

The pannier will be a present, so it can be a little spendy.

Temple Cycles of Bristol do a lovely Brooks pannier. Alas they want 84 pounds for one. Now I would pay this for two.

They do nice bikes too, Reynolds steel, not as pricey as some

Vaude panniers appear to be very high quality and are worth considering. Less pricey than Ortleib.

JE James are still selling the fastrider panniers cheaply.

Plenty space in them but no small pockets.

arkel (canadian?) are even more pricey than ortleib but come with a full guarantee/replacement commitment.

ours have had reasonable use over past year and still look brand new.

@wingpig isn't the union 34 the ones that we all got for about £3?

used to fall off but i don't think this was because of the swapping concept. something to do with actual attach mechanism. my mind has blissfully eliminated the details.

I bought in the union 34 three pound deal. Was an attache case i went for. You could remove the fitting so it was just an attaché case. And lighter, had good sleeve for laptop and good cover as part of the three pounds (might have been eight pounds but deffo single digit) pretty sturdy. Never had it fall off but lost the fitting when i removed it. But rediscovered it during a desk clearance. I got my three pounds out of the cover and the laptop sleeve and am ahead of the deal on the bag,

I tested mine with cartons of juice and milk and suchlike before risking a laptop in it and then only for the very few occasions when I needed to put a laptop on a bike but not in a more secure shoulder bag or backpack. I still have the wee clip rail which slides into the bag and was going to put locking clips on the rail and bolt the rail to the bag. Not really fussed with the feature of disguising it as a normal bag by removing the clips and can always have it with the clips away from the body when over the shoulder.
The only pannier I have non-locking clips on is the double Lidl over-the-rack thing, which used to have velcro on the inside of each half which could be loosely attached to the rack struts after lots of fiddling from the opposite side and which came with no means of securing to the top of the rack unless I clamped it down with a strap removed from a third-hand double-buggy seat strap. It now has a Vario clip on the top and a Vaude hook on each side, though the rear bottom corners drift into the wheels on the singlespeed (which only has an ex1, rather than an ex2 with the bent extra leg at the back) so it might be further modified with bits of wood and locking clips.

@wingpig, it was good as a carry on bag before Ryanair went totally strict. I then used the more squash able Timbuktu courier bag which i think is an awesome bag. Does carry on, does commute, does biggish shop supplemented with carrier bags.

My Osprey Flapjack works OK as a work/holiday-travel/shopping messenger-type bag but tended towards being filled with lots of wee bits of crap from daily office-commuting, back when that was a thing, reducing the volume for shopping, so I've had the double rear panniers on for a couple of months to cope with incremental stock-ups. Shopping-for-shopping's-sake trips are usually undertaken with double pannier (stays on the bike) and a 25l Vaude rucksack (comes into the shop) so that nothing gets too squished.

See, I have stress dreams about bags.

On a normal work day, I fill a bag inside my house, then put it on the panniers.
At work, I take it out, and once in the staff room, decant things from the home bag into the fridge, my locker/box, and my work bag.
Without fail, I discover that a thing I need is in another bag.
End of the day, I do this all in reverse. In my dreams, I'm just emptying and filling bags which are never the right size or have holes or keep spilling open...

I'm convinced that a pannier I can simply bring with me everywhere I go will eventually bring me a new type of stress dream, and a change is as good as a rest.

More than ten years after I last had to commute, I *still* get stress dreams about missing trains.

I can finally say it's been a year since dreams of kids calling me from airports--I left the boarding school job in 2011!

Quite a few people reporting more interesting dreams since the pandemic started - certainly this is my experience but given there can be nothing more boring than a 'missed train' dream it's a low bar.

I've had a brain wave about a leather satchel i already own and love, and which I may be able to 'convert' to hang off the rack safely.

but in the process, I've also discovered Alban Bike Bags on Etsy, and they look really nice, getting good reviews. Not for camping or hard trekking, but fine for the office.

the 'air bag' from Mundo Music is also impressive, photos claim to make everything from guitars to bongos to surfboards possible on a cycle.

I almost did that with an old leather briefcase I found in a junk shop in a converted CWS in the town where I went to school, but it would have needed a shoulder strap adding to it too.
I would recommend these hooks for converting anything to a pannier, from a Bag for Life to a garden trug:

With the need to do fewer/bigger shops over the past few months I've been looking at newspaper-delivery-bag-sized Dutch panniers but seeing as I've spent ten years adding Vaude locking hooks to and stiffening the backs of various imperfect panniers I've just ordered a set of waterproof Vaude as they were a bit cheaper than usual.

Those prices! Mind you, if Stuff cost what it properly ought to cost, we would have a whole lot less rampant hyperconsumerism.

Good to see them making bags again though.
