    I have just been given a 250 page book on the Rohloff SPEEDHUB gear system by way of thanks for some stuff.

    Most of it is testimonies from people who have cycled across the Atacama, Himalayas, Skinflats etc but also history and technical stuff.

    Available for loan once I've read it.

    Famously, a mechanic at Bikefix in London had a Rohloff hub and took it to pieces (out of pure interest, presumably), and it took him three months to put it back together.

    I've probably got your closest Rholoff, so if you wanted to ride it (with appropriate safeguards), drop me a PM.

    Regards,

    Robert

    I'm having an auditory hallucination of the moment he withdrew the guts from the case and the workshop was sprayed with tiny sprung-loaded components all making that 'cartridge cases on marble' noise from gangster films when the shooting stops after an ambush.

    Dustpan and brush put round, some bits lost, others gained. Many sweaty nights with tweezers and dental picks before finally biting the bullet and buying a second hand one off Ebay three months later.

    @Roibeard

    Can't be too many of those beasts in this neighbourhood right enough. Which bike is it on? I do fancy a go and will gladly de-louse any steed I ride.

    Beware Roibeard's invitation to ride his Rohloff equipped bike. You may be required to assume a "bold" riding position.

    If they came with a (counterweighted) sturdy loop to lock them through I'd consider one.
