Braid Road is closed (as of yesterday) south of the mini-roundabout at Braidburn Terrace / Hermitage Drive.

Not sure how far south the closure goes.

The no parking cones went up to the Hotel on Sunday morning, so it might just be that stretch.

Will probably do the trick though, that's the key bit of through route.

Yep, gives up at the hotel.

To add to the slight disappointment, the temp traffic lights at Braid Hills Drive have gone and there is now vehicle access and so more traffic over the top

Mr fimm went past Silverknowes today and wondered why the road closure had not been extended to the bottom end of Marine Drive as well, as there's no reason to drive down there at the moment. (Or is the cafe there still open? I think that's unlikely...) He reported several cars parked in the area, if the police want to go and talk to people about driving to take exercise...

Her son is a cyclist. I am happy to pay a small fine for. RLJing If cameras are placed on traffic lights and every car driven through a red light also results in the owner being fined. Would be good way of raising revenue. Not sure how they would know it was me on my bike though. How would it be enforceable though?

Helen is a tired old semi-retired “journalist”, desperately trying to earn a few bob with a failing “newspaper”

She’s a cyclist (& jogger) hater with nothing better to do. Ignore.

She has form for writing cycling hate-pieces in the EEN.

@neddie, yes at the end of her piece there is a funny request from her editor to buy a paper. Who would do that?

    "...luminous jackets..." They are either
    1) aware of something we are not.
    2) beyond the point of caring about facts
    3) More ignorant that suspected
    4) Trolling

I suspect 3 although part of me also wonders what her coat stand looks like at night.

I imagine Helen, Fag in the ashtray, scotch on the go. Desperately rummaging around for a column - nope, nothing coming to mind. Drags on the fag, Swigs he whisky and goes for that old favourite - Swipe at the cyclists (including her son).

yes indeed. The editor's email address is available on her twitter bio. I will probably email her tomorrow and ask if she is willing to have a sensible discussion about the constant dripfeed of anticyclist clickbait.

Thing is they will say well we have that with Alistair Dalton in our sister paper so we see our job as stoking the anti-cycling lobby amongst drivers and armchair haters.

But do have a go, I think @Wilmington’s Cow late of this parish did engage with one of the JOhnson Group papers for a wee while.?? Trying to have a grown up conversation.

Was past earlier today and the café seems to have an outside point for takeaway orders. No Perspex barrier that I could see (though they were probably only setting up) and presumably you have to order in person and wait. Not sure it sits well with me but chains like McDs are opening up and it’s perhaps unfair to comment without seeing it in action.

Noticed the Cramond Falls café is up for sale as well.

Prom was busy even at 8am today. Going inland for my exercise tomorrow - feels safer

    Lesley Macinnes:

More later this week, I expect. Several schemes going out tomorrow to local ward councillors for fast feedback before proceeding/publishing.

I rode a loop including the three closed roads yesterday. They’re closed with barriers, with a gap to ride through of varying width/accessibility, and a sign saying

    “Road Closed
    Except pedestrians and cyclists
    Keep your distance”

The closures take in about 1km at Silverknowes, 200m stretch of Links Gardens, and maybe 300m of Braid Hills Road. The main shared feature was that no buildings were accessible solely from the closed roads, which makes sense... but to have so much fanfare about scraps from the table is galling.

In an unsurprising turn of events, when I got to the bottom of Silverknowes Road I saw the driver of a council bin van drive info the pavement to bypass the barrier, and then up the closed road. I followed him back up the hill, he didn’t stop, just drove to the golf club car park. As far as I saw, there weren’t any bins on the road which he would have been checking on, even as a drive-by.

We’ll need our council to do a hell of a lot more than this to give people options to move around after the lockdown is lifted, so I look forward to seeing what else is coming. There needs to be a network, not a few roads which can be closed only because that causes absolutely no inconvenience to anyone. I don’t think we need all of these to be fully closed to motor traffic, but with some reorganisation of parking and use of one lane one way for motor traffic, it would be possible to make a full, city wide network of wide safe cycle paths with enough space for socially distanced overtaking.

I’m doing my best not to be cynical here: Edinburgh residents have shown when asked that they are broadly supportive of much more provision for cycling, and I am confident that our councillors realise that in the absence of other options, people are likely to take to their cars in larger numbers than ever, when they need to get around again. Now’s the time to be putting those other options in place, so I wait with bated breath...

With London’s public transport capacity potentially running at a fifth of pre-crisis levels, millions of journeys a day will need to be made by other means. If people switch only a fraction of these journeys to cars, London risks grinding to a halt, air quality will worsen, and road danger will increase.

To prevent this happening, TfL will rapidly repurpose London’s streets to serve this unprecedented demand for walking and cycling in a major new strategic shift.

It is vital that Edinburgh remain car-centric so that we have a baseline for the London experiment. How else will we know how much of a failure it is bound to be?

What makes you think those parties voters are more attached to motoring than the others?

“What makes you think those parties voters are more attached to motoring than the others?”

That of course is the longstanding problem - it’s what many politicians BELIEVE.

At least senior UK Tories (because they are in London?) are in favour - though would be more supportive of a Tory Mayor!

One can judge each party, and its supporters' priorities by looking at their actions when in government (pandemic emergency measures notwithstanding).

Tories - more air travel/airports, great car economy, motorway building, privatisation of rail, deregulation of buses.
SNP - Scotland's Oil, more air travel/airports, motorway building, ferries, a few token gestures on public transport and cycling.
Labour - more air travel/airports, motorway building, rail nationalisation, investment in public transport, a few token gestures on active travel.
Lib Dems - somewhere between Tories and SNP.
Greens - not in government in UK yet but policies speak for themselves.
UKIP/Brexit - maybe not go there?
Other smaller political parties are available.

The mayor for Greater #Manchester, Andy Burnham, is announcing measures to give "more space to cyclists and pedestrians", while accelerating plans to build a new network of cycle routes.
    @AndyBurnhamGM
wants to maintain the improvement in air quality when the #lockdown is lifted.

Meanwhile, in London, entire traffic lanes are converted into pavement overnight.

Three heavy planters each side - no problem

Some pavement cycling versus a big van pulling in - maybe signs further back ignored

The leader of the Tories in Edinburgh, Cllr Iain Whyte said he was concerned the closures were more about pushing active travel onto the Capital rather than an emergency measure to allow for more effective social distancing.

The mind boggles at the amount of arguing and politics over three relatively small closures that with easy alternative routes. No wonder it takes forever to get anything done.

It is almost as if by doing these things at parks and beauty spots they are almost encouraging people to go out, which is against the guidance and information the government are providing.”

Would this be the same Tories who were objecting to closing the car parks in Holyrood Park because people needed to be able to drive to open spaces to exercise?
