It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.

I was talking with some neighbours about cycling routes, and recommending eg going out to Musselburgh and points east via the innocent. What's the best way to give them some advice on the route?
Spokes maps? online map?
I have certainly given email or dm directions to people over the years, but it seems like there should be an easier way...

Sustrans route through Bingham only haas a few wrong turn possibilities but once you get over the railway at The Range (fka Big W) gets a bit footerie although several pairs of eyes looking for the Sustrans signs might work.
Unless actually wanting to show someone the route eg to Dalkeith on the Sustrans. I tend to just go down the road these days but that is not great for the beginner
i use google maps for myself, but frustrating for showing 'quiet routes'. i've defaulted to cycle streets again for this, but am sure there ought to be an easier way.
for EH11-Port seton, google maps misses all the key bits.
For our group rides, I use Map My Ride to draw the route, which can then be turned into a GPX file and I suppose loaded into a GPS (although I've never tried this).
I like cycle.travel, although it is sometimes a bit too keen to find a quiet route.

yes, i do this a lot, works very well.
For myself, I use Google Maps (and moving the line around until the route looks sensible) and then Google Streetview to have a look at the roads and junctions (and signs) which helps with navigation on the road as well as avoiding scary looking roads. I don't usually have my GPS switched on on my phone, but I will download the relevant Google Map if I don't have a good paper map for where I'm going.
+1 for cycle.travel. It's definitely good at finding quiet routes.
that does look good - shows the diversion at Brunstane particularly well
+1 cycle.travel - routing is much much better than google maps. Easy to link to a saved route and the printed output is really nice.
Spokes maps are always good.
...and you can drag the route about on cycle.travel too.
OSM Plus is good app. Used for first time in Denmark a few years back. You do have to load base maps though. It will give you turn by turn directions better than Google.
I had to ditch though as just didn't have space on my old phone....
New Spokes map is out and is nice to show to family - unlike a screen image you can get proper overview - plus some handy info about cycling scene here. Have copies at shop and Polly at Greenwood has some as well.
cycle travel sounds good, I'll check that out next time I can actually go anywhere (possibly some time in 2021?)
If only not being able to go anywhere meant I stopped thinking of/planning new cycling adventures...
