I presume so, too. Is there any legitimate reason they couldn't use a couple of collapsible bollards instead of a fence?

Presume they (reasonably) consider that fly tippers would (probably) knock them down.

Network Rail are experts in chucking up this kind of fence. They'll have miles of it lying around.

Urchaidh they have one goal To stop you wandering on the railwayYesterday at Auchengray Level Crossing I am descending just as the barriers are starting to go down. I was a good Tom Boonene and waited a few minutes whilst the lights flashed and the siren beeped.
THe barriers then went back up and the beeping stopped . THe neighbours must get used to it I suppose. No train came. was maybe a test?

Thanks for posting the pics Urchaidh. My preferred route to the Fort is back! I wonder if it might see more use once the house building in the field near the Old Craighall services is completed? Looks like a fairly big development...

I'm not sure if RoboCop's video camera has captured any fly tippers but it goes off about once a week when I run past. They should have a nice collection of my hand gestures by now.

They are actually legally obliged to fence the railway. And they (or other railway infrastructure operators) end up in pretty big trouble of they fail to do so e.g, Birtley rail firm fined £2.7m after boy electrocuted:
An investigation found the firm knew the site attracted trespassers, as shown by the presence of graffiti, fly tipping and vandalism, as well as reports of drinking and drug taking there.
However, there was no fence or gate stopping people leaving a public bridleway and walking on to the yard, and no warning signs to deter them.
In such circumstances it's not completely surprising that they err on the side of total exclusion until called out for unreasonable obstruction. Though it would surely be less costly to design and install a properly compliant solution in the first place rather than have to go back and fix something done without proper thought. ("Rework kills projects," as the not-well-enough-known saying goes.)
I'd be surprised if anyone seriously imagined that that robocop thing is unlikely to elicit anything other than a derisive response, though.

I wonder what makes things important enough for a spy robot. There were a couple beside the pylon on Harry Lauder when it was getting re-wired but also several in the old Boroughmuir playground before redevelopment began.

Unless the Robocop things are a lot more sophisticated than they look I think they would become the next level up from a Burger Bike in the 'conspicuous theft for bravado' stakes.

Are we talking about those yellow things on four legs that they used at the old Powderhall waste processing site before it was demolished?
Perimeter intrusion detection system. Anyone goes in there, security is alerted and they send the guards round.

Network Rail have been fined £135,000 for poor fencing about half a mile from the gate/roboguards which perhaps explains, but doesn't excuse, their zeal to fence off everything.

I forgot there would be robots there when I went past last night. There was a pile of fly-tipped rubbish a few metres B&Q-wards of the first one. It wasn't triggered to shout incomprehensibly at me until I went past it, so people have possibly just worked out where they're safe to Dino stuff without being recorded.

Definitely been a resurgence in fly tipping in the area the last few weeks. Someone has dumped a huge heap of rubbish west of the robots blocking the farmer's access to the field beside B&Q. They also managed to temporarily block access to the incinerator/power plant by just dumping their rubbish in the middle of the access road.
