PM says George Floyd protests have been ’hijacked by extremists intent on violence’
“
CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".
IT’S TRUE!
CCE is 15years old!
Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.

PM says George Floyd protests have been ’hijacked by extremists intent on violence’
“
"Statue of the man who helped defeat fascism at the cost of millions of lives.
Now hidden - by a Tory government with an 80 seat majority, in case it offends anyone.
Have a nice weekend. The UK is over, done, finished."

Critics say PM’s claim that George Floyd protests ‘hijacked by extremists’ are dangerous

What was the Bruce racist about? The Infidel?
Beatles racist now (penny lane Might have been named after scouse slave trader James Penny - tho - lanes are are for nicer people Like Ronnie Lane named for Plonk in Newham East End - I do recommend his song Debris with Faces. Je te laissez sur le debris as we say in Franglais)
Is the chat with The Bruce not that once he had a bit of breathing space he decided to install his brother as King of Ireland.
Which had a similar level of Irish support and went about as successfully as Edwards decision to be King of Scotland..
You do wonder if this statue graffiti was done to be ridiculous.
@!4westfield could be satire?
Bruce’s brother continued war against Plantagenets in Ireland? Or tactics against the Normans or chasing the Balliols
Bruce keen on going on a crusade but never made it
What was the Bruce racist about?
The guy was an actual medieval warlord who'd take an axe to you if you looked at him funny. Racist? I doubt it.
It will be interesting to see how arguments like this will become more common and what the reaction will be.

“The mayor seems startlingly blind to the structural racism inherent in spending £1.2bn in imposing a scheme that will almost certainly increase traffic and pollution – and certainly lock in existing pollution levels into the future – through 80% black and minority ethnic Newham, which is already the most polluted borough in the UK.”

Yes there isn’t any way him killing John Comyn in the church can be shown in a good light and chasing Comyn’s supporters to Ireland is perhaps my favoured explanation of why the Bruces were in Ireland.
The current mayor of Bristol seems a good egg.
He really does try to get the media to break free of their right wing shackles
I do not condone the chucking of the statue but surely you understand why? So stop banging on about the police. (Says the mayor)
Alas the media cannot adjust a story once they start it - they either plough on or let it fizzle out and YOu cannot make the media take anything but a right wing stance as the media is owned by the right wing.
The guardian is the only paper I can read. Well the Finacial Times used to have a lack of editorial and a good prize in the saturday crossword.
I accept the Guardian has a liberal editorial that suits my tastes
I'm pretty sure Roibert a Briuis would have taken an axe to any editor of the Guardian crossed his path.
They really should have put "Feudal Lords in Sanctuary Lives Matter" on the Bruce's statue.
Similarly, if Alfred the Great is targeted, it should be with "Danish Lives Matter".
I think the only figurative historical statue I have any fondness for is this one. I don't imagine it looks anything like Wallace or that Wallace wouldn't have split me in two for looking at him funny.
Budapest has an excellent museum, Memento, of old Communist sculpture at the edge of the city.
It also has a scary bunch of Magyars in the city centre, which seem to underline Hungary's latest ultra-nationalism.

Another take on Bristol by the always excellent James Bloodworth:-
“Because political activism is dominated by university students, more deep-rooted inequalities are sometimes passed over by campaigners in favour of headline-grabbing stunts. Spectacular public actions can galvanise opinion. But race equality campaigners will want to ensure that superficial change is not a substitute for what has been correctly identified as structural and institutional racism. Too often mere cosmetic change is a feature of liberal identity politics: the diverse boardroom but the overwhelmingly black, poorly paid shop floor. That isn’t equality; nor is the act of pulling down an objectionable statue in a city where residents from Black African and Black Caribbean families have persistently high levels of unemployment.”
Enjoyed the James Bloodworth piece. Interesting interview piece in New Statesman with the Oxford Rhodes Must Fall organisers 5 years on. Two of them are now professors, which is nice. One telling nugget -"donors had threatened to withdraw gifts and bequests worth more than £100 million if it was taken down". My goodness!
The other university in Oxford used to be called Oxford Rhodes University IIRC - they maybe changed their name?? Not coming up. Sir Rhodes Boyson to have his knighthood stripped (posthumously)
Cambridge Poly went for Anglia Ruskin Uni when they could have gone for Pink Floyd University??
When you google Piper at the Gates of Dawn you get Floyd rather than Wind in the Willows
Kenneth Graeme’s son committed suicide at Oxford Uni
@gembo - Are you thinking of Oxford Brookes?
there is a rhodes university in south africa. pretty sure oxford brooks was always Oxford brooks.
Oxford Brookes used to be Oxford Poly
one of the poly - university success stories.
Yeah sorry Oxford Brookes, named after Bruno
batons drawn thru in glasgow the now

David Olusoga - does the house in Bristol show at the moment? Is that the right man?
Prof Sir Geoff Palmer keen to annotate statues correctly for this very reason
Pulling down statues does zero wrt institutional racism
What's the deal with Robert Peel? All I know about him is that he instituted the police force. I've looked up his 10 points of policing, and they are very sound.
His father was very rich mill owner? Cotton from plantations?? Or Maybe Irish famine/corn law stuff? But there was also talk of pulling down the Duke of Wellington (Peel’s political mentor) - where would drunk weegees put their traffic cones then????
