Was mulling over my days at Strathclyde Uni as a researcher (The statistician in the dept has same surname as my kids maffs teacher).

At Strathclyde the psychologists all had young families and lived in dormitory towns and drove in to town centre every day. Most had some sneaky parking spot.

YOu see if doing job with brain not brawn in Glasgow you could really only live in the west end where house prices shot up or a wee bit in south side with good house insurance.

Whereas in Edinburgh there are tons of places within the city boundary you can live in middle class splendor and cycle to work.

THis is why only Dave Brennan, Wee Folding BIke and the youngster in the Drizabone cycle to work in Glasgow

    @ gembo

So, cycling to work (these days) is ‘middle class’ and will now always be?

My guess is that the chance is 100%, while the probability is much less.

@arellcat, nice guess, I could ask the maffs teacher. The statistician retired long ago

Sounds about right tbh. I also suspect that even in Edinburgh it's a fairly fixed pool of mostly middle-class, middle-aged people who are fortunate enough to afford to live close enough to where they work that cycling to work is a realistic option for those who aren't a) a bit mad or b) have good fitness levels.

    ( I'm not sure whether I'm in group a or group b )

Hmmmm, I cycle from Airdrie because the memsahib already had a house in Airdrie.

Before that I cycled into Glasgow from Barrhead and before that Cumbernauld.

Number 4 son some got a gorgeous dark blue ‘83 folding Kingpin yesterday. I picked up a nice green ‘77 Twenty Stowaway.

Boys 2 and 3 have been going all over Coatbridge and Airdrie on old three speed bikes. Last week I spotted a folding Twenty at the Fountain before I noticed it was number 2 riding it.

My calculator agrees with the Daily Record, but not with @gembo. Should I get it checked?

I didn’t look at the numbers? Just the 249% If something increase by 100% it has doubled.

They do say it has more than doubled so they ain’t wrong

Mr Cheyne was ace statistician but you must never ask him a stats question when he was having his lunch. Not because lunch was sacrosanct NO stats were sacrosanct so Mr Cheyne would immediately answer the question so his lunch would tend to gravitate right at you

Reminds me of an older debate that touches on some of this:
