The third man in our group yesterday we met at Broughton. He had a spesh Sirrus which is a fast flat bar bike to which he had attached tribars so he could tuck.

He had a p-word on gravel at Meggat Water. He took his tools out of a flask he had in the water bottle holder. THe new tube had as many patches as the old tube. At one point he wedged a can of Pepsi between the tribars. Inevitably it fell out. So we had a bit of a stop for that.

He was a fit cyclist and he could cycle stretches with no hands. After about 75 miles I plucked up the courage to say what about buying a road bike through bike to work.

He reminded me of me twenty years ago. (Though I cannot cycle with my hands off the bars for very long - only reason I never did the tour :-) )

    Is that good?

    Neither good nor bad

I used to repair tubes with 3, 4,5,6 ,7 patches

When you are out in group and other people are waiting and watching you end up adapting the group approach. So If I p-word now instead of relaxing, patching the hole, smoking a Gitanes sans filtre for 5 mins waiting on the glue I will put new tube in and maybe repaire the other one when I get home

Conforming to the expected norm can be a bit of snobbery but also saves time.

Rolling with a water bottle (I am back on Ribena since my tabs ran out) is more efficient than drinking a can of pepsi for sure.

aye, maybe.. or just chuck it in that big box at the back of the garage where the rest of them see out their half-life

@bax, agreed. Life's too short to be patching inner tubes unless absolutely necessary.

Old inner tubes do come in handy, as for example frame protectors when you want to clamp something that would possibly scratch the finish. Also as tyre boots.

So yes keep them in that box, plus maybe some scraps cut to length in the portable tool kit.

@bax-san yes but eventually @SRD’s daughter takes them all away for a school project
