Still no statement from the police? Very strange

Driver attempted to flee the scene. He was stopped by a van driver (I have a mate who drives for Lothian buses and was on scene soon after impact)

Interesting...
Even more reason for police to say something!

Will not want to compromise prosecution?

Would have thought they’d want to appeal for witnesses (or dashcam footage as it’s called now).
Posted 4 years ago # -
Perhaps they might be waiting for the extent of injuries to be clear before deciding what (if anything) to charge the driver with.
Speaking of which, a rather odd witness appeal from an hour or two ago:
About 8.30pm on Friday 19th June 2020, a 32 year old man was cycling his dark red Genesis Hybrid pedal cycle on Barnton Avenue. About 20 yards from the junction with Cramond Road South, the rider became unseated from his bike and sustained injuries. The exact cause of the incident is unknown, however there is the possibility that another vehicle may have been involved.Posted 4 years ago # -
I saw the Barnton one. Im assuming found unconscious but damage to the bike suggests a vehicle involved

And another -

So, two appeals for witnesses, but not for actual subject of this thread.
Strange.

Police are now appealing for dashcam footage.

That Mount Vernon Road junction is on my commuting route.
I reckon if you'd asked me about it yesterday, I'd've said "Eh, it's not too bad - there are far worse bits of Gilmerton Road." But reading that article I remembered all the close calls I've had just there.
Reading it just after reading Cllr Webber's tweets about "cycling lobbists" being "disproportionately represented" has done very little for my blood pressure.

Ex Gilmerton Rd commuter here - had a few near T-bonings on the way northwards in the morning, so can see how something untoward may have happened. Thoughts with the man in question.

Little child also run down recently Abercorn in Porty - Clllr Webber might be sympathetic or maybe not if I were to suggest we need to make streets safe for people not pander to the motor industry

Since lockdown and despite there being a substantial reduction in the number of cars I have came close to being knocked down almost every single time I have been out. There is a ridiculous lack of attention from most drivers on the roads these days.

new rules apply
think back to to dom's pantomime in the rose garden
chucks his cup casually at the end, big smirk to the assembled journos as he walks on by
the english elite's received view of gen x philosophy
rules are for the fools

I didn't realise that I had the English to blame for dangerous inattention on the roads. They're just not like us.

Indeed. Clearly the fact CEC built approximately zero cycling infrastructure for a large number of years leading up to this while shovelling the cycling budget into AECOM's pockets (interesting company btw) as fast as it could and consulting on the consultation regarding the previous consultation has nothing to do with imperilling cyclists either.

Cycling in the south of Edinburgh has not materially changed in thirty years. They might as well have taken the active travel budget to Jura in a suitcase and set fire to it.

@IWARTS only if they wrote a book about it
Posted 4 years ago # -
It would appear I knew the cyclist who was hit by the van driver. I'm not giving any more details just now. (The alternative is that I'm getting reports of another serious accident...)

The man hit on Mt Vernon Road has died.
Posted 4 years ago # -
@stickman how shocking and terrible.
Posted 4 years ago # -
Horrible news.
Thoughts with all who knew him, including @fimm.
Posted 4 years ago # -
Chances are I heard the collision sitting on the back step.
Posted 4 years ago # -
Oh awful, wretched news.
Posted 4 years ago # -
Oh @fimm. That is awful.

I’ve seen one of his friends share his name.
Married, two young kids.
Cycling on his way to work.
This can’t go on.

Tragic, shouldn't speculate but this feels like it was particularly avoidable from my experience commuting down GR until I moved this spring. Thoughts are with the man's young family - how do you ever get over that..

“I’d like to thank those members of the public who have contacted us with information on the collision over the past few days and continue to appeal for any other witnesses to come forward, particularly if you have possible dashcam footage of the incident itself or either the vehicle or the cyclist in the area shortly beforehand.”
“
Which makes the (apparent) silence about the Newington incident seem odd.
