This is dreadful - really hoping for the best for those involved.

EDIT: @Stickman - He may not be able to get out of town, but I do have a suggestion for where he could get to...

Obviously wishing the best to the folk on Morningside road - so horrible to hear about this.

Here's the facebook event page for the minute's silence on Thursday morning at 8:45. The signals will be overridden and all on red at that time and we will mark a minute's silence and lay flowers.

@algo: as always thank you for organising. Can you list the details here as sharing Facebook events only works for people on Facebook? I have shared on Twitter.

@stickman- thanks of course. I made it public so I thought it was viewable without an account. Perhaps that's wrong.

Another tragic and needless death on Edinburgh's roads. There will be a minute's silence at the junction of Mount Vernon Road and Gilmerton Road at 8:45 am on Thursday 2nd July. Please come to respectfully observe with appropriate social distancing a minute's silence for the tragic passing of much loved father, husband and volunteer ICU nurse James Harrison.

Utterly tragic - I would try and say more, but I'm a roiling mass of incoherent and contradictory emotions at the moment, so best not.

Genuinely don't know what else needs to happen now, before the role of cars in modern cities is seriously looked at..

    How absolutely awful

First the BMW driver fleeing the scene, then the Mercedes Van driver and now this poor wee boy.

How can we make this stop?

“How can we make this stop?“

Simple simple truth is ‘we’ can’t.

On one level these are all random, unrelated, events.

But the bigger picture is ‘road deaths’ are ‘normal’, ‘to be expected’, ‘just part of modern life’ etc.

Politicians expect votes from ‘normal people’ who (they believe) have to/want to drive.

Today’s event involved a significant number of police. But policing (as we know) seem to accept daily transgressions - speeding, driving while on the phone, ignoring red lights etc etc.

Whether it’s all too normal or they don’t have the resources or have other priorities is never clear. The prosecution system often seems lax or inconsistent.

‘We’ get marginalised as ‘the all powerful cycle lobby’ - like somehow we are a threat to people’s freedoms.

I don't know what to say. This is utterly horrible. So sorry for the family of the child.

Perhaps some of ‘us’ should meet Morningside Cllr Cook and try to find out if he winds up ‘cycle campaigners’ on Twitter as his idea of fun, but is also capable of a sensible conversation on road/cycle/pedestrian safety too?

He certainly used to be able to. He was at Spokes' hustings in 2017 and my memory is that he was thoroughly reasonable. Spoke about adding a north-south route after CCWEL, for example.

When we spoke at the Transport committee about bike buses he was supportive and reasonable. I don't really know why he's taking the stance he is. Is it just to be contrary and show some sort of bravado?

Mr Cook is entirely capable of reasoned and reasonable discussion. It would be ironic if I crticised him for having a distinct social media persona.

I suspect it is an odd time within the Scottish Tory party. It was recently led by someone who (in Scottish Tory terms) could be considered a moderniser, with a reasonably close policy connection to the UK party under David Cameron. Brexit split that policy connection, the change in UK leadership split any personal connection between Scottish and UK leaders.

This led to the resignation of Ruth Davidson and her replacement by Jackson Carlow, literally a failed used-car salesman. The new Scottish leader, in attempting to repair relations with London, has hardened a number of policy positions.

Nick Cook is an adviser to Ruth Davidson, who will only remain an MSP until next year's general election - when she will be "elevated" to the Lords. I suspect he is trying to stake out a future in what is now a quite different party. He may be trying to differentiate himself from his mentor and her policy positions, some of which may be out of favour with the new leadership.

This could all be nonsense of course - but simply branding someone you may need to engage with a Richard is never a great strategy. I suspect the most useful approach to dealing with Nick would be to find examples of Tory councils who have taken a positive approach to cycling, plus examples of once anti-cycling businesses who are now converts - failing that, reference to the PM's time as London mayor and his pretty bold moves on things like the Embankment cycling lane in the teeth of pretty fierce opposition.

Pointing out that a policy position is no barrier to political advancement is never a bad idea when speaking to a politician. They all want to be re-elected.

    There's a awful/Freudian/accurate typo in that chip-wrapper article.

It's in a quote from the FB page which doesn't have the typo, but that may have been subsequently fixed.

The Facebook page invites people to: “please come to respectfully observe with appropriate social distancing a minute’s silence for the traffic passing of much loved father, husband and volunteer ICU nurse James Harrison.”

Morningsider/ IWRATS - very well said, both. Sometimes we should draw breath before commenting/ engaging. People are always more multi-dimensional than we will see from just a social media presence.

    Posted 4 years ago #
  29. At the same time I do think we should call out things like simply dismissing those who want safe streets as 'the hard left' or 'cycling lobbyists', because on that social media platform that feeds into the confirmation bias of so many.

Multi-dimensional they may be, but the one-dimensional approach on social media can have very serious real world implications.

There does seem to have been a very recent switch to Nick's approach where it's almost as if he's feeding off the negative energy he can create - like a Colin Robinson*

    * perhaps a niche telly reference....
