One could argue, if one felt so inclined, that the killer driver was as much a victim of the current road system as the child she killed.
I'll bet she hadn't driven very far, so why did she feel the need to drive at all?

Perhaps she doesn't feel safe on busy, crowded pavements.
Perhaps dealing with fast-moving traffic on foot is stressful.
Perhaps she can't walk as far as she used to, but never thought of any other way of travelling.

    Who knows?
It could be none of the above, of course. I'm just speculating.

Can't say I think much of Mr Arthur's contribution.

What can he, a member of the coalition administration and member of the Transport Committee, do when faced with the coalition administration and the Transport Committee?

Ah, that was my fault, he came up to say hello to me and i immediately got rid of the journalist and dumped it on him. I did ask her if she would publish info verbatim from a tory councillor without checking her facts (Scott- I’m not a tory councillor] Journo - I’m the climate journalist at STV I have to fact check everything,

As a councillor in the ward better he did it than just me ranting angrily about people being murdered on Edinburgh roads and pavements and a collective amnesia or acceptance Of this by drivers that this is collateral damage for the freedom to pollute the atmosphere.

In his defence he will have said a lot more but that will have been edited as Stella and Ulli’s bits to camera covered them???

Run a consultation. Bravely. Maybe big himself up at a funeral.

Again, he wasn’t looking to do the interview, I dumped it on him

When he was first elected in the recount or third tally (slight surprise) he was much more mouthy about our issues. BUT i fear he was told to pipe down.

Cam my Day cycles, Scott cycles, Maureen cycles, Lesley mac cycles, Gavin cycles,

But the coalition has an anti-cycling enemy in the Tories. Graeme Bruce big cyclist but he is silent. Nick Cook and Susan Weber basically anti-cycling for votes.

He was actively pursuing interviews. I declined as it should have been about the tragic death and about James Harrison at the that point. Cllr Arthur was extremely keen to be interviewed and asked me several times where the reporters were.... make no mistake about that.

“It’s not good enough to just offer condolences. In 2012 I called for capital road safety summit and raised these concerns at Scottish Government’s road safety group with many of the people campaigning today, and I can’t believe eight years later we’re still mourning cyclists killed on our streets.

I just did the calculation for fun and that car at 50mph has the same kinetic energy as 250 bullets from an assault rifle.

Imagine that coming down Minto Street.

@algo - that is such a good move. Will be buying a pizza from them as soon as I can.

Why did they arrest the man if it was the car and the traffic island colliding? OHHH HE WAS DRIVING AND IN SOLE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE 2 TONNE MACHINE.

Civerinos excellent pizza - pricy but worth it IMO. Sit in by the slice great for lunch (post covid)

Good for Civernos. Tasty pizza - though be careful how you order. I thought I'd ordered a pricy slice and it was a whole pizza which took me 3 days to finish.

Chivs is the best pizza my eldest has ever tasted. She has Some views on the owner which run counter to his goodwill gesture above also owns High Dive which was The Monty

People are rarely 100% good or bad.

Many good evenings spent in the Monty in 2005/6.

    @arobcomp

Of course, my eldest still goes, the owner is not in the league of say the owner of The Apartment

The Monty was fab for Queens Hall - always tricky to find good pub there before or after a gig. Was in south sider before Bats for Lashes which was ok.

    Still the Maltings then, no?

I suspect you might be right that it was called the Maltings at this point. I have a picture somewhere of me wearing a buff as a pirate bandana and drinking half a pint of neat rum there.

Good dark rum - not white or spiced - I'm not a monster.

    Dark rum like OVD?

Or delicious golden rum such as the Diplamatico? Which I am hoping I will get for my birthday

    Fair cop

Sadly we will probably return to the terrible topic this thread is about in due course

Any word on the cyclist who was taken out by the driver of the stealth BMW that the van driver had to prevent from fleeing the crime scene?

Not aware of anything - which seems bizarre/curious/worrying.

Civerino clearly astute marketers: now offering 10% off for people who come by bike.

I don't really care if this is a shrewd opportunistic marketing decision or a principled choice - either way it's enlightened.

@algo - oh, absolutely - wasn’t meant as a slight on them and I expect others to follow suit.
