My OH has a lovely Focus ebike and has done many km in her first year or so of ownership. However, her propstand is driving us both mad.

The propstand is loose in the joint and makes a racket esp our rough roads. I had tried injecting grease to no avail and I cannot see how to get into the joint to tighten it up. You will see in the photo below a strap - this does help but is not convenient.

Two solutions: get into the joint (how?) or buy a replacement (is there one that would fit?). Help!

The strap I do not like.

Got to figure out how it was assembled. Could be push-fit, could be some clever hidden fixer. If you could take it off the bike and post close-up pics of both sides of the joint?

Okay. Will do but probably tomorrow.

The strap wouldn't be used. But it does stop the rattle (I'm a mathematician, I'm allowed hypotheticals)

C-clips or circlips. Even if you can't undo the main joint to tighten/add washers you could shove a couple of circlips into it to tighten it up, if it's developed a bit of waggle from the force applied when the stand is deployed?

What's the body of the stand made of? If you're at the point of buying a new one you could maybe just shut it in a vice to tighten it up. Kill or cure.

    @winpig - good call.

    Thanks iwrats and wingpig
    Some photos are below.
I am not sure about c clips as the shape of the fitting isn't cylindrical?
The movement was originally in the normal direction of movement but now there is a bit of lateral movement as well. It's more of a squeak than rattle. The bike weights 22kg so it would put some stress on the stand, and it's been touring a couple of times. I'd guess its made out of aluminium.

Drill out the central pin, it can be replaced with a countersunk bolt and nut. Once apart you can gauge what thickness of shim to use to take up the play.

There's got to be a sprung element to hold the prop stand up when not deployed. It could be engaging with a rebate in the central pin.

It looks quite solid. I'd try gentle squeezing in the vice using a couple of bits of softwood to protect the black finish from the jaws. I don't think there's going to be enough play in it to snap the bracket.

    Thanks all! :)

I think I will try IWRATS solution first. Then I might try something along the lines of wingpigs suggestion, experimenting to see if I can slot something in to reduce play. I'll not get into drilling - I am mechnically incompetent. Plus new ones don't cost much (£15 ish).

I have one I'm not currently using, but it clamps to a seat stay and might not be disc-compatible.

If it works I will take payment in the form of a maths lesson. I have answered exam questions on matrices without ever once understanding them.

If it doesn't work I will re-sit Higher maths as penance.

A couple of years back I passed the non-calculator paper of Nat 5 maths (seemed to be the same paper I sat in 1981) The calculator paper though was gobbledegook
