DRIVER CHARGED AFTER COLLISION WITH CYCLIST

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "At 3:30pm on Sunday (26 July) police and emergency services were called to a road crash involving a cyclist and a Mazda car on Easter Road at the junction of Dalmeny Street.

"The 25-year-old male cyclist was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary with leg injuries. His condition is described as stable.

"A 41-year-old man has been charged with alleged traffic offences and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."

has been charged with alleged traffic offences

Surely the word “alleged” is not required here. The charging with traffic offences is a fact, no allegations about it...

More “papering over” by the press, consciously or subconsciously, of motor violence

Suspect it's just a legalism to avoid prejudicing any future trial (e.g. the defence could argue that the jury were unduly influenced if the police were implying guilt in press releases before any trial)

He wasn't charged with alleged traffic offences though. He was charged with traffic offences. This isn't an accusation it's part of the legal process. Will they start finding people guilty of alleged offences next?

Yes, the charge is when Her Britannic Majesty says 'You broke one or more of my rules and my people will see you in my court to prove it to my judge/jury/sheriff/executioner.

I was talking to a lad once who was locked up. He was 15 or 16, stole a car and was in the driver’s seat when fished out of the canal.

Those are just allegations, he said when i asked him why he thought he should steal cars if he could only drive them into the canal.

In the press, they would normally write:

"Such and such has been charged with attempted murder"

    They would never write:

"Such and such has been charged with alleged attempted murder"

    Prove me wrong, internet!

@neddie, don't worry, that article carefully avoids saying what the man was charged with. Charged in connection with an alleged attempted murder makes it sound like the paper is going off a rumour that it was a attempted murder but might have been something else.

Given the state of journalism it was probably furious cycling.
