I have signed up for the Edinburgh event

They send you some hills to climb and you send them your route.

THey did this in London and Manchester. Neither place having many hills near the actual conurbation/urban end

But Edinburgh does have various hills so will be interesting to see what Rapha do with this.

It is free, it is just a way of them getting your data. But they have mine already. Not bought anything from them since Walmart took them over. THey do have a series of articles by women cyclists which is interesting.

@gembo you are top of the google search for this - maybe you have a private invite and it’s not yet public?

@gembo suspect we have a similar view on swansea wining the PL ..., or even division 2 .. winning a game would be nice.. but I’d be interested to know if this event ensues. 4 peaks in one day?

I have 32 x 32 at hand, or rather in the garage.

@Jack always good not to raise expectations when supporting one of the non-major teams.

4 peaks can be done over two days but i have potential whisky tasting on the saturday night which might impair my climbing

On the Rapha Website if you ignore their extortionate clobber and focus on their films and photojournalism there is some interest.

In 2015 they appear to have gone on holiday by accident to Inchnadamph (the film is called Assynt). The models look frozen, they do not speak, the wind is strong the rain is hard. Occasional sunlight.

The credits suggest the cyclists were all playing characters so there is maybe another film that has dialogue and howling winds in the soundscape? This one just has a Murray Lachlan Young poem as narration. It is very very funny film (that is if you are twisted like me)

Inchnadamph has a few houses a Lodge and a hotel. But punches above its weight as its caves have polar bear bones and Eurasian Lynx, Sabre tooth tigers (maybe I exaggerate that one) and Inchnadamph also allegedly the Mecca for Geologists because of the Moine Thrust.

Would frozen-looking models not make you think that the expensive clothing isn't up to the job of insulating them?

@wingpig, nothing will insulate you against the wind and rain in assynt.

I would dearly love to cycle there but you would need a support car

The rapha models always look mean and moody wherever they go. This time also cold and wet. Which I liked a lot.

Assynt is of course stunning and empty. Good pies in Lochinver.

Link to the Assynt film @gembo is talking about

Lochinver pies are very good indeed. Nice pastry, nice fillings and they are BIG.

That video does seem like a prolonged Guiness advert.

(I own a handful of Rapha items though I only buy from them during the sale)

Ooh, I love a Guinness advert. OUr favourite ever was when a guy at the Cameo jumped up and did one in real life but the Rutger Hauer ones, the swimming one, the white horses with the drumming. All good.

I have only ever bought rapha kit in the sales too

I would say those guys are under-kitted for the season and the place. Risk of hypothermia if they have to stop.

The Rutger Hauer where the thing with long arms is thrashing about in a pond. Very memorable.

Also too skinny for assynt. You need blubber up there. The sun came out so was summer.

Rutger in my head goes Tick follows tock

bUMp, this weekend, seems a palaver, so PM me if you want my ticket

It’s time to get planning. The Urban Peaks Challenge is this weekend and we can now reveal the checkpoints to you.

In Edinburgh, we’re getting positively medieval as we route you past 2 castles and Arthur’s Seat. We’ve really split out across the map to test your routing skills, bounded only by the Firth of Forth. If you’re riding on Saturday we recommend you stop by RCC Partner Cafe Gamma for a quick pick me up to keep you on form. They’re shut on Sunday, so are not an official checkpoint.

    Route Map: https://www.komoot.com/collection/1007240/-urban-peaks-edinburgh

    Checkpoints: Arthur’s Seat: https://veloviewer.com/segment/686793 Fa’side Castle: https://www.strava.com/segments/2261530 Kaime’s Road: https://www.strava.com/segments/8073071 Roslin Glen: https://www.strava.com/segments/823919

We can’t wait to see how you get on. Remember the route is up to you so you can tailor your experience. Efficient and meticulous route planning exercise or all day Audax adventure? It’s what you make it After the event closes you will be sent a form to submit your ride evidence so we can make sure you get your finishers gift, sent to Gamma for you to collect.

    Event Rules

Your ride must take place between sunrise on Saturday the 22nd to sunset on Sunday 23rd.

You may split the ride into two chunks or do it all at once.

Your route must include all four peaks and the checkpoint.

Your route must start and finish at the same location (you choose where).

You must take one photo at each checkpoint (selfie/view). Upload it to social and tag #raphaurbanpeaks.

You must follow the Highway Code, any local cycling restrictions and all applicable Covid-19 guidelines such as social distancing when taking part in this challenge.

Once you've completed the ride, you'll be sent a form to submit your route and evidence. Fill it out to claim a limited-edition reward.

It’s got some decent tarmac on it now, redmist. Got resurfaced earlier this year, I think.

    @gembo, that's what I thought, but

"Your route must include all four peaks and the checkpoint."

So what is the 5th checkpoint then?

I think they maybe mean the checkpoint at each of the peaks?

Sounds interesting...might be tempted if I can rescue my gravel/CX bike from work in time..

    Do you get a map/ checkpoints? Nevermind there's a Komoot link: https://www.komoot.com/tour/268993569

    Looks.....well a bit scary if I'm honest!

    @mccairney

    Yes that is the route.

They are saying it would not be the hell of the north if it wasn’t hellish. Also claiming ride can be done on road bike like they do at Paris Roubaix. There are three stretches off road. WoL path, then Clubbiedean to Thriepmuir then stretch at self Muir Wood (some bodies may be buried). Basically will be muddy and road bike would Get trashed.

Does stay within Lothian health board and indeed only in two LAs

You could always cycle the Stockbridge to Clubbiedean have a cup of tea at the wee cafe then roll home downhill. Apart from the WoL path bit that is all tarmac.

The stretch from Clubbiedean dean to the poets glen is muddy.

Sticking to the route it is flat or downhill after that apart from the steep ascent of Cairnpapple

It is not dissimilar to a Forth and pentlands route I have in my head but that one is all on road.

    That looks "fun".

Expert gravel ride. Very good fitness required. Mostly paved surfaces. Suitable for all skill levels.

    Not for me then.
