I mentioned before that I was driven at by a dead eyed radge down at the lower Gilmore place entrance to the canal.

Last night I was running early for band practice so i parked the gravel bike (looking good as tourer with two ladened panniers) at the barge cafe (8a,m-8p.m.) and sat in the sun drinking a lovely double espresso. There were some bangin choonz coming from further down at the actual basin and not what you might call mellow.

I set off over the lift bridge and down the road parallel to the canal where the traffic warden HQ is. Lo when I reached the ramp back up onto the canal the same car was parked illegally and the choonz were blaring from the flat above. The rubbish strewn by seagulls (herring?) and the car with back windscreen stoved in and covered in grafitti added to the ghetto feel.

Great to hear of Tricross adventures and panniers full of Mike the mic. When you next perform I shall be there.

In my recent experience it has been lesser black-backed seagulls which have taken over Edinburgh. Larus argentatus in some decline.

Ah yes that species. When I lived in Thistle Street the Herring Gulls dined on the duck carcasses from the Chinese restaurant about 4 am. The restaurant denied it was them which was strange as in addition to the duck carcasses the serviettes from their restaurant used to also be strewn along thistle street lane.

THis was 1994-2001. When the restaurant Fishers took over Lyon and Turnbulls auction house the rats moved along the cellars towards us. This did seem to upset the Herring Gulls.

THe Tricross gears held out not too bad last night under heavy load and some slope but will need further attention so I will speak to Seamus and Ted about rustling up further payment.

I was given a lovely book last night to add to my panniers. Spell Songs - comes with a CD. Mrs Garto immediately spotted it as a very arty initiative she likes in schools called Lost Words by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris. Some fine paintings of Goldfinches and Barn Owls also poems and songs from Ivan’s boy (from Lau, beloved of Laidback Dave) and Karine Polwart who tramps the moors above Fala (down in the valley the Fala Burn has burst flooding my friends house just as they finished redecorating). Hope this chat is OK?

We'll fix those gears for sure. Robert Macfarlane is a minor deity. Or possibly the high priest of Nan Shepherd.

Karine Polwart appears to be very intriguing.
