It's really not, and I don't think it's going to cope well when Braid Road reopens. I daresay if it had been open when the new Braidburn Terrace layout was designed we'd have a Toucan Crossing with a button that stops traffic rather than a Tiger crossing. It's one thing at the moment people stopping to give way when they have to turn, but when they're expecting to keep going north and down Braid Road I think people will be travelling faster and not stop.

Maybe a pile of bricks needs to be left either side of the crossing? Pick up a brick on approach...

For what it's worth, I think it's pretty serviceable in practice - more ebb and flow between modes rather than forcing pedestrians and cycles to stop as a Toucan would. And I sat there watching it for an hour while re-recording the static videos pre all the changes - I will link the video here when I stick them up on Youtube this week.

This is the first time cars will be able to travel the length of Braid Road following the removal of the mini-roundabout and a ban on vehicles turning from Braid Road into Braidburn Terrace.
It's hard to predict what will happen. Will the zebras provide a similar disincentive to drivers wishing to breeze through the junction? Or is the incentive just to put the foot down. Unfortunately, we are about to find out.

New ETRO has build-outs on Braid Rd between Braid Cres and Braidburn Cres - as with other bits of this ETRO it's hard to know what's 'Option 1' rollback and what's 'Option 3' going in during Sep/Oct, but hopefully these are included to slow things to a safer pace:

They're similar to the chicane build-outs (shaped to give priority to uphill traffic) which were removed from the similarly-sloped Paisley Crescent a few years back, which were replaced with less-effective symmetrical pinch-lumps.

Yes, those should work for the north section but I'm concerned about the section down from the Braid Hills Hotel to the crossing there. People speed massively down that hill and if they think they're going straight on I'm not sure they'll slow now. Ironically that section was actually better when they had parked cars on the west side of the road as the narrowing made people slow down.
My ten year old has only just started crossing that every Friday to get home from Stage Club at Greenbank Parish Church so I'm already nervous about it with the current setup! I hope my fears are proven wrong.
I wonder how long implementation will take. If I remember correctly they agreed not to remove the filters until all the segregated lanes/chicanes/etc were in place.

I think there's a strong argument to be made for further speed reduction measures on the south end, particularly as the lead-in for the tiger crossing from Braidburn Terrace is so obscured by a huge wall - so a lack of decent visibility of folks heading for the crossing. The crossing itself I believe is on a raised table, but there needs to be a measure further south to drop speed before this.

“there's a strong argument to be made for further speed reduction measures … a huge wall”
Now there’s an idea…

It follows an incident last year when a boy was reportedly hit by a van and knocked off his scooter on his way to South Morningside Primary School.
The incident happened near the junction of Comiston Road and Morningside Drive, one day last September.

Transport convener Stephen Jenkinson said: "This type of work should be a priority for the council. It is really important as we encourage children to take more active routes to school, we have to make sure those routes are as safe as possible.
"And all the work going on in the background is good stuff and it's a model for how we should be looking to develop school road safety around all our schools across the city."

archive.ph looks to be 'having a sad' today - I keep just seeing an Nginx configuration page when I click the links.

Went and read directly on EEN. Really good news, this - and continues to make the argument for continental-style side road zebras at far lower cost.

I was one of the folks that gave the deputation to TEC on that. It's less than we asked for, but more than we hoped for so I'll take the wins!
We've asked for more details on the crossings (unclear if they're zebra or pelican crossings) and the signage. We had of course asked for the Quiet Route to be maintained too, but didn't want to lump that in with the works going on immediately around the school.

@pringlis we should have a think about what specific pain points we might see an increase in traffic/danger for SMPS commutes when Braid Estate rat runs are rediscovered; this is not an angle I had considered when plotting the locations for static filming (Braidburn Ter at Braid Rd, south west corner; Braid Ave at Corennie Drive looking downhill; Braid Ave at Cluny Gdns, looking up). If there were one or two key places that we anticipate an increase - affecting kids walking to school - particularly at the Morningside Rd end of the Braid Estate, it might be possible to arrange filming there (though doing so at School run times would likely need to be an afternoon to be workable rather than a morning as I have to get my own kids to school!).
Greenbank Pl & Braid Cres? Comiston Ter? Where do folks end up trying to go and park?

I’m glad ppl still use CCE to record/discuss this sort of thing.
Obviously a lot more gets done off-line and through WhatsApp (etc) groups, but showing what is being done locally helps/inspires ppl elsewhere.

(From above)
Well “should” should be very much up to him!
He’s the first TC I haven’t met in many years.
I’m sure he ‘should’ be better than some recent ones, but I have no feeling for whether he will be or not.

FWIW, I think these unofficial non-zebra* zebra crossings are being used to deflect attention** away from doing anything that restricts drivers. When what really needs to be done is to reduce the volume of traffic cutting about side streets.
I don't think the painted-on zebras are scalable, nor desirable. They'd have to paint every single junction in Edinburgh, in Scotland, otherwise it becomes the "haves and the have-nots". And it gives a licence to drivers to ignore the highway code rule of giving way to pedestrians at side streets when there is no paint.
And do we want ever greater amounts of microplastics from the paint being washed into the ocean, to eventually end up inside every living tissue of us?
In this specific case, in Morningside, I'm sure there is merit in a proper zebra, with Belishas. But don't let it distract us from what really needs to happen, which are modal filters everywhere to restrict rat-running and keep through traffic on the main roads, where it belongs.
*The ones just painted on, without Belisha beacons
**Cllr Neil Ross being seen to be "doing something", while actually doing nothing

'it gives a licence to drivers to ignore the highway code rule of giving way to pedestrians at side streets when there is no paint.'
This is a very good point.

2025 Footage all now on Youtube: these statics are at 4x speed but there is a link in the description for each to the 'realtime' version.
See if you can spot the balaclava yobs cameo on Braid Ave at Cluny Gdns.

Updated Safety Audit. Dated July 2025 but I’ve only just seen this one... still 20 issues and recommendations including removal of TPO’d trees in the conservation area. I wonder if you’re even allowed to remove trees under a Temporary Traffic Order?
Posted 3 days ago # -
@pringlis - ETRO (experimental) rather than TTRO (temporary); I feel like it’s fairly typical for an RSA to moot possible mitigations without considering any other factor (like how lovely the trees are, or biodiversity impacts).
As an aside, I know some Braid Ave residents who have been very keen to legitimately lay hands on that doc - can you let me know (here or otherwise) how you came across it? Some of the folks there have been struggling to get a response from CEC on this.

Replied to bakky's email but for transparency sakes I got the link from Facebook but it's also on the councils FOI log.
