@Morningsider - thanks for that - great to hear. @gembo - thanks for cheering me up...

Excellent set of photos there.
And, of course, excellent work by @algo leading to them.

@algo - is this person aware that drivers also reverse and perform u-turns in other streets where children are walking? Can they make the connection between the source of the risk and the mitigation of that risk?
Posted 4 years ago # -
@Stickman - indeed.
And @Frenchy - thanks but lots involved including yourself :-)

Jasper Lamar Crabbe owned a lot of real estate in Orange County California, despite being dead. Indeed he purchased it two weeks after he died which was clever of him. Can you guess that movie?

A previous tweet from the Whitehouse Loan account says "Residents recommend timed road closure instead to make this safer." (others have called for this as well) But how would it make it safer, as you would still have vehicles doing u-turns when children are going to school!
Posted 4 years ago # -
@gembo - made me laugh that.
@algo - no mention of the fact the u-turning driver will have passed several signs warning of the road closure, but chose to ignore them.

Yeah. As algo says, please don't amplify anything posted by Webber or the 17 follower Whitehouse account.
It's pure lies.

“Can you guess that movie?”
Tinseltown without the rain??
Posted 4 years ago # -
will have passed several signs warning of the road closure“
Which must be part of the problem.
Do any signs say ‘local access only’?

@chDot, nice, double reference. mr Gittes, most people never have to face that at the right time and the right place they’re capable of ANYTHING.
Posted 4 years ago # -
I knew you’d appreciate that!

After all
What can I tell you, kid? You're right. When you're right, you're right, and you're right.

Had to drop my youngest at nursery on Kilgraston Road today before taking the 5 year old to SMPS on Canaan Lane so had a chance to try the Canaan Lane section out. Definitely feels safer southbound, especially for a 5 year old. At that time of day there's usually a fairly constant stream of cars but we saw none.

I made a trip to school this afternoon with mini-Greenroofer on the back of the bike (emergency run for a Nat5 French oral after a Zoom failure at home) and we used this route. On the way to school we came across people skateboarding and roller blading on Whitehouse Loan, on the way back (chucking out time at JGPS) the area outside the school was awash with random pedestrians and kids on bikes.
As I said cheerfully to mini-G on the way past "If you build it, they will come".
It was rather wonderful.

“It was rather wonderful.“
But it’s not right.
It’s not the natural order.

thanks for that @Greenroofer - lovely to hear.

Rumour, well the council's favourite Scott Arthur, has it that this is the changes the council are planning when Braid Road reopens southbound. If it does have to reopen, and I remain unconvinced that it does, then it seems a reasonable compromise?

Hangonaminute, buses don't even use Braid Road, so why will opening Braid Road improve bus times?
Posted 4 years ago # -
Thanks @pringlis - the folk living on the south part of the route really do just have a name for their otherwise identical roads - this would at least be something and is pretty vital if it's going to be called a quiet route. I also remain unconvinced Braid Road opening is a good idea
Posted 4 years ago # -
@fimm - because everyone currently driving on Comiston Road will start driving on Braid Road instead, freeing up Comiston Road for the buses. And definitely not leading to more people driving. No, definitely not.

@Frenchy: Except that I thought it had been shown that buses aren't being delayed up as a result of the Braid Road closure?
Posted 4 years ago # -
I think Lothian Buses said they weren't being delayed in September, but they were seeing slight delays in December.
EDIT: Latest data shows no delays in February - http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/topic.php?id=20337&page=7#post-346959

And why haven't they reverted to the original quiet route plan, with the modal filters on Braid Road and Hermitage Gardens? "Change of Priority" is just paint, and experience clearly suggests that the second thing that rat-runners pay scant regard to after speed limits is priorities at junctions (the third thing being the markings at junctions which show them which side of the road they should be on, in preference to taking the 'racing line' which so many of them seem to regard as their right).

Interesting change at the north end of of Canaan Lane. The Road Closed signs on Newbattle Terrace kept getting knocked over and cars were still going down and then having to turn which made things even more dangerous so they've moved a sign to the top of the road and renewed the red marking on the road.
Should be more effective at stopping cars, but it is a big annoying to have to move out of the way of the sign which there is still legitimate traffic coming southbound meaning you could be on the wrong side of the road.

Given the rather odd nature of the red surfacing, I have a feeling that might just be a utility company job rather than CEC (with the more effective positioning of the sign purely by chance).
If it works though!

There was some red paint filling one of the 'enlarged cycle lane at pinch point' on Queensferry Road, so maybe its a thing...

Changes for the southern end of the Quiet Route as part of reopening Braid Rd southbound: https://drscottarthur.scot/2021/04/03/spaces-for-people-update-braid-road-greenbank-to-meadows-quiet-route/
TL;DR
Seg cycle lanes on Braid Road.
Diagonal filters at Braidburn Terr/Braid Rd, Cluny Dr/Hermitage Gdns and Cluny Dr/Braid Ave.
