I think this would make a great urban event, or is it too short?

Some interesting cut throughs off Canongate and up at Oxgangs. I'd try it on an LB bike just to make it more hilly!
Not sure what the max gradient is.If you want a nice hilly finish then add in Hillend Ski Centre. Cafe too!

The Braidburn Valley is a lovely route for commuting through at the end of a hard day's work, but the dog walkers do get priority. I wouldn't suggest using Cockmylane (between Oxgangs Ave/Swan Spring Ave and Caiystane Gdns) because it's far too narrow and easily spoiled; Comiston Road to Pentland Terrace to Buckstone Terrace and up to Fairmilehead crossroads is a nice lungbuster of a long drag of a climb though!
Why go up the Pleasance or Dumbiedykes? Queen's Drive would sort out the men and women from the boys and girls. :-)

My commute home has about the same amount of ascent.

It ain't a proper commute unless you add in 4 laps of The Seat.

It's got nothing on the CCE "Top 10" hill climbs that we've all signed up for when it's a bit warmer, sunnier and there's some more daylight. However, to make the latter more interesting we could always start at sea level? :)

Braid Road just south of Hermitage Drive is nice and steep and quite substained.
