i get this quite often around 4am, maddening low drone hum with no obvious source

My left eustachian tube is a bit blocked so I have an idling cross-channel ferry on that side. It's the Edinburgh-Valsalva service, sailing around 09h30.

So if you are one of the people who can hear it, you might actually be a sort of 'Earth-whisperer', able to hear the planet itself - or, less poetically, its microseismic signals. However, that probably isn't much comfort when you're being kept awake in your Midlothian cottage at night.
I hear it all the time, bax. It's roughly 40Hz.

We're back to three night-noises now that the ferries have left the docks and the nearby industrial units have resumed normal operating hours.

@steveo - wait until a rail grinder passes your place at night. We used to live down by the railway at Shandon - first time this passed (at about 3am) I thought it was some kind of alien invasion:
