For those who don't know, a new death cult anti-active travel group has been formed, initially to oppose safe cycling infrastructure on Lanark Road through extensive consultation.

The person behind it appears to be one 'Sue Webber' acting in a personal capacity as is her undoubted right.

The idea seems to be to drag the Spaces for People initiative into the swamp and drown it, thus killing a few Edinburgh citizens too through the virus, road traffic violence and complications of their sedentary lifestyles.

Lanark Road is a vital arterial route, therefore local residents must be able to partially block it with their stored vehicles at will.

“The person behind it appears to be”

    Rumour, gossip or evidence?

Evidence. She's on the Facebook group confirming she delivered their leaflets on Sunday. The Chair of the group though is a Mr Derryck Reid.

It will be interesting to learn if the Professor travels to work by bicycle and how well he knows Professor Doktor Stadtrat Herr Arthur.

LOL One of his lasers was in the lab where I used to work at HW (we didn't use as it didn't work anymore). I don't know him personally though.

Last time I saw him was in March at Slateford Lidl when he tried to buy two large bags of bog roll and was confused when the person at the till told him that he couldn't buy two.

Oh, that's getting interesting. That first reply is from the head of the group where I was. Also a cyclist, I think used to be an everyday cyclist but now less.

I thought that if Councillors got involved in one-sided campaigns and started leafleting and so on, then they weren't allowed to then vote on such issues?

Therefore Webber should be banned from voting on the Transport & Environment Ctte.

    Nothing obvious to that effect.

That's true of the planning committee, which is more judicial. I don't think it's true of other committees.

We'd perhaps struggle to get councillors to go to PoP if it were.

That lady is a material danger to our city and its residents. Virus transmission, road traffic deaths, sedentary lives all kill actual people.

    Sums it up nicely

I tried to think of a single word to summarise all of her behaviour. "Rogue" is too favourable, the best I could find starts with A, has 8 letters and ends in "ole"

I think this is a product of Alex Cole-Hamilton and Susan Webber fighting for the anti-active travel vote in Edinburgh Western ahead of next year's Scottish general election.

Given the huge political drivers of Indref2, Covid and Brexit, it is hard to see the seat turning Tory over arguments about a few parking spaces. It was previously held by the SNP and they were second in the 2016 election, with the Tories a distant third.

SNP gain would be my guess.

While completely agreeing with his point, I think someone could point out to Prof Thomson that Lanark Road is already a single carriageway (same as Comiston Road was and still is) since there is no central reservation. The road isn't being downgraded in any way, which some drivists might otherwise read in to his tweet.

@ejstubbs, as a professor should he not know this?

Banging on about roads and carriage ways when the issue is about parking is very Weberian [susan Webber not Max Spirit of Capitalism and the ethos of Protestants Weber]

and all those houses have off-street parking? or do some of them not?

@SRD - A small fraction don't. Around 20 houses, if I remember correctly - it's certainly far smaller than the number of parking bays included in the plans (~100).

i'm also wondering if someone should remind these folk of the names, families etc of those who have been killed cycling on the lanark road like Andrew McNicholl https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-21615382

Why do they need to reverse into their drives? Couldn't traffic lights be tweaked to provide gaps to reverse out?

Even if something's tweaked to provide adequate gaps (or if there are adequate gaps without any tweaking), reversing in is still safer, no?

“reversing in is still safer, no?“

Not really about the dangers of reversing in, it’s about the reversing out.
