In the spirit of CCE I decided to freewheel slightly and bought a few parts to help me along (specifically an actual cigar box as I don’t have the skills yet to make a box) and began construction this afternoon.

@stickman, any cigars?
Posted 3 years ago # -
@gembo: close, but no

Famous apocryphal story of chap who attempted to avoid paying duty On cigars he had imported saying the product had vanished in a series of small fires.

Business idea: members-only private cigar smoking room entered by an airlock and filled with 100% oxygen (OK dioxygen, this being Clarifications, Corrections, Errata).
VIP room filled with ozone.

I don't have the time to consider this sort of endeavour but talk of resonating cavities always reminds me of the packing crates we had in the shed when I was small, mostly used as umbrella stands for garden tools but also for hiding in. They were quite light with single-ply sides but braced with aluminium at the corners and would have been ideal for some sort of sound-based use, had they not eventually disintegrated in the 1980s.

...would have been ideal for some sort of .... use, had they not eventually disintegrated in the 1980s.
Applies to many things and characteristics of the UK of GB&NI?

IwratS Business idea: members-only private cigar smoking room entered by an airlock and filled with 100% oxygen
Wouldn't this be a members-only smoking room? I'm confident that it wouldn't just be the cigars smoking...

Each cigar would last one puff. The Ozone Room would light the cigar for you.

Has Iwrats not just described an Inspector Morse episode? Five Oxford business men and an Oxford Don all spontaneously combusting and no evidence?
Tea chest bass as played by Mark Kermode in his skiffle group.
Big George was a rocker from Greenock, had a great band called The Styng Rites. Huge quiff.
His little brother was smaller with a smaller quiff and buddy holly specs. He once attacked my ankle looking for the red thread of my American 501s. He had a skiffle group played Buchanan St with these tea chest basses. He did not like us calling him Wee George.

I've seen a cigarette being used as a straw for liquid oxygen.
It was the very definition of a quick drag when lit...

Sticking with Science, our washing line is now doing that thing that caused the single span suspension bridges in USA 1950s to oscillate then collapse.
There is no wind to cause this but rather the weight of frozen snow on the line has caused an internal oscillation

@gembo
How many Hertz? Do you think whales or elephants be jammin'?
Posted 3 years ago # -
55Hz

Tuners have arrived. Still need to cut the gap in the neck inside the box.
So cold in the shed that the gas cartridges have frozen and need to be taken in the house for a while before I can do anything without freezing.

the gas cartridges have frozen
Oxygen, yeah?
Posted 3 years ago # -
dioxygen monoxide, dangerous stuff.
Posted 3 years ago # -
Dangerous enough that I was forbidden from making it long ago. Apparently it's a lovely blue colour as a liquid.
Posted 3 years ago # -
IWRATS I think that's Dihydrogen Monoxide you are thinking of...
Posted 3 years ago # -
That's what I meant :)
Doh
Posted 3 years ago # -
@fimm
I feel awkward issuing a correction, clarification or erratum on this forum to what may be an excellent joke, but alas it was dioxygen monoxide (aka trioxygen, aka ozone) that I had in mind.
Dihydrogen monoxide is a colourless liquid of very low toxicity and flammability.

Got everything strung up, tentioned and tuned and I don't think oak is meant to bend that far.

Nice neck @steveo

The varnish has really tightened the box and she rings. I wish I knew how to play her. Video tomorrow once I've watched a few YouTube tutorials.

Looks very suave. Definitely at the upmarket end of cigar box guitars

I have left a few mistakes, scratches and pencil marks to be in keeping with the culture and to allow folks to point them out along with likely remedies. But I like to finish wood proper like.

Magnificent.
Please head over to Twitter to contribute to the “Concern Troll Councillor Blues”. It’s shaping up to be a classic.
