Peoples, hi ! Am still here still doing it, not on here much . Anyway ! I am planning a ride including small people, and have checked lots of the usual big name routes, sustrans Nat cyc routes but they are pretty rubbish so, I fancy heading from my base in falkirk to strathaven ! I ( don’t we all) a route of mainly traffic free paths or trails, I suspect head to Bathgate to airdrie path, but thereafter I know nothing !!! I presume there might be a connecting route from there to ravens Craig and onto Strathclyde park and maybe on to strathaven but I can’t find anything !! I might just be being stupid but he ho that’s not a first ! Any help gratefully appreciated, ! No doubt I could just get an os map and do that using minor roads but the parents of little people are a bit wary ! A designated route would placate !

@splitshift, even the off road route beyond airdrie (I mean NCNR75) is on road or beside busy road until Uddingston. Quite good from Uddingston into Glasgow. But again sections of main road, quiet but not deserted and also an EK option signpsted with the NCN a signs too.

    Strathaven, though I am doubtful.....

Gembo, thanks yes I’ve just found a very old 1997 cycle route book, it has a few options in it but I will check out the modern lie of the land !! Some very quiet roads around strathaven which I could use, just gotta cross the Clyde and the m74 !!! I’ll have a look at more modern stuff soon , thanks for your reply !!

@splitahift - good to hear from you. Ordnance Survey online has a layer showing National Cycle Network routes and some of the other major cycle routes. Pretty well up to date. You can find it at:

Not sure about getting to Strathaven though. Reckon you would have to be happy using fast country roads for a decent part of the way. Not somewhere you want to be herding young folk.

Are you set on going to Strathaven? Have you considered the John Muir Way? Some of it's on road, but there's a lot of towpath and gravel (and maybe some pushing) as you head west. My recollection of the on-road bits when I did it a year ago was that they were very quiet. You do need to be good at opening and closing gates, though. I got very fed up with that.

Guys, good to see / hear you ! Yes it’s strathaven that I intend going to , people live there! I will do the os maps thing, the john Muir way, it seems to travel along every lane or trail around my home village !! Can’t ever remember seeing any bears here though !! The one at Dunbar is a bit of a surprise if you don’t know about it !! The strathaven thing is a poss charity thing that the smallers seem to be interested in . I might head over in the car and do a loop around that area but I liked the idea of letting the kids know that you can actually travel on bikes, not just have fun until you can get a car !! I’ll keep in touch !
